Bloomingdale's Goes British for Fall

OD has the South Florida exclusive first look at the store's British designer capsule collections.

August 13, 2013

Bloomingdale's reaches across the pond this fall to bring exclusive items and capsule collections nodding British style (and of course, The Beatles) stateside. Launching in stores this September, there will be must-haves for men, women, and the home—from a punk-style Cambridge Satchel Company tote to cufflinks in the shape of John Lennon's iconic specs.

For men, brands such as Burberry, Ted Baker, and Paul Smith will offer British fashion essentials ranging from dapper suits to dark denims. Accessories include Beatles-centric pocket squares, scarves, and umbrellas. And for the ladies there will be sumptuous cashmere sweaters by Aqua, Union Jack-printed denim by Hudson, and more from All Saints, Karen Miller, and Reiss. Our personal favorite? A pair of Kardinale smoking slippers with Swarovski-embellished Union Jacks.

And for die-hard anglophiles, Bloomingdale's is partnering with national tourism board VisitBritain on custom British travel packages exploring England, Scotland, and Wales. So you can potentially shop for a "holiday" and new vacation duds in one spot.

MOCA's Optic Nerve Screens 15 Short Films

MOCA's global search for the best short films culminates on August 23.

August 12, 2013

Showcasing short films by an international cast of creators, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) North Miami will welcome its 15th annual Optic Nerve film festival on Friday, August 23. Just 15 filmmakers out of hundreds were selected as finalists by a handful of curators from around the world, including MOCA's own Alex Gartenfeld. Finalists hail from London, Berlin, New York, LA, and even our own backyard, such as in the case of Plantation, Florida filmmaker Jillian Meyer. Local film buffs will recall that Meyer's short film, #PostModem, made with fellow filmmaker Lucas Leyva, screened at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Following the screenings, which begin at 8 p.m., Aram Moshayedi, curator of LA's Hammer Museum and a member of this year's Optic Nerve panel, will give a talk before Gartenfeld selects the winning piece(s) to join MOCA’s permanent collection. Tickets to Optic Nerve 15 are free with museum admission; space is limited, so reservations are recommended. 770 N.E. 125th St., North Miami, 305-893-6211

Mastering the Art of the Pinxto

Forget tapas. Throw a pinxto party using recipes from Basque region foodies.

August 09, 2013

Pinxto recipes from storied tabernas and “secretive grandmothers” in Spain's Basque region are revealed in a new ebook by bespoke epicurean tour group San Sebastian Food. What are pinxtos? Think small, shareable plates, often served with a toothpick or skewer.

The first edition of an ongoing book series, The Basque Pinxto Cookbook (available on Amazon, $2.99) comprises 23 recipes with quick, easy preparations—some of which don't even require an oven—as well as drink pairings, and even a pinxto party how-to. Sample recipes like peach gazpacho, skewered monkfish and prawns, and garlic mushrooms are light and well suited for Miami's blazing summer temperatures.

To boot, the Basque region is renown for its top-tier cuisine, boasting the most Michelin starred restaurants per square foot in the world. It is also the epicenter of Spain for classic pinxtos. So be sure, San Sebastian Food and its contributors know their stuff.
