July 08, 2013

Occupying the former Bond St. space inside Townhouse Miami is newcomer Mister Wolfe, a sleek gastro-lounge spearheaded by nightlife veterans Max Pierre, Erik Yehezkel, and DJ management group AE Collective. The seasoned trio tapped Nuno Grullon to curate Mister Wolfe's shareable plates menu; Grullon is the current chef and owner of MiMo's adored Ironside Café. His simple yet sophisticated repertoire includes small bites like smoked salmon mousse served in mini crepes and a spicy yellowfin tuna tartare. Positioning itself as the new go-to for nighttime revelers, Mister Wolfe boasts signature cocktails, Champagne, and a full bottle list. The kitchen is open until 1 a.m. for late-night appetites. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Sunday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The toast of Paris Couture Fashion Week, Miami's official coffee break time...

Karl Lagerfeld's Paris Couture Fashion Week runway show

Karl Lagerfeld's couture collection debuted amid the rubble of a decrepit theater in Paris.

The talk of Paris Couture Fashion Week? Mr. Karl Lagerfeld. The persnickety designer showed in a rundown theater (think dust, boulders on the floor) with a futuristic cityscape backdrop. Style scribe Cathy Horyn likened his luminous, architectural gowns to the work of Zaha Hadid. [The New York Times]

Speaking of Hadid, the rooftop pool of her forthcoming Miami condo tower, One Thousand Museum, is best described as a modernist fish bowl. See it to believe it. [Curbed Miami]

On the local fashion front, Diane von Furstenberg will be opening a store in Merrick Park come September. Music to our ears, indeed. [South Florida Business Journal]

Cuban coffee is mother's milk for Miamians. Now, thanks to Jenny Lee Molina of JLPR, there's an official time of day—officially recognized by the city—for afternoon coffee breaks. Duh, 3:05 p.m.—how did we not think of this sooner? [WRLN]

Armand Pena's Ideal Miami Night

From dinner to dancing, the local DJ and producer shares his nightlife routine.

July 03, 2013

Miami's DJ Armand Pena

Armand Pena knows a thing or two about being a night owl in Miami.

Armand Pena is a fun-loving fixture of Miami's emerging dance scene. As the former resident DJ at Nikki Beach, he helped popularize the club's signature music program and "Welcome to Miami" events. His innovative sounds have been heard on BBC Radio One, Erick Morillo's Subliminal Invasion, and at gigs stretching as far as Berlin. On Saturday, July 20, he'll join the lineup at Morillo's IndepenDANCE Music Festival at Sun Life Stadium. With so much late-night experience, we had to know what Pena gets up to on a typical Miami evening.

Stop one: food and cocktails. "I head out to Mercadito Midtown for their tableside guacamole, along with their freshly made tacos—not to mention their cocktail menu is to die for! They have a mango purée with tequila reposado that is mouthwatering."

Stop two: mega-clubbing. "After having some tequila at Mercadito, I would head out to Story Nightclub to listen to one of my favorite acts play and hopefully catch them playing one of my tunes."

Stop three: late-night eats. "Before heading home, a late-night grub I can't resist is Los Perros. They have the best Colombian hot dogs and empanadas in town! I highly recommend them."

Not only that, her colorful, retro sense of style has fashion editors taking note. She'll touch down in Miami fresh off of the UK's Glastonbury music festival, where she rocked the stage with a headful of braids that almost touched her kneecaps. Soon to come is her third studio album, set to be released via her own record label, Saint Records. Tickets to Friday's show begin at $35. 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, 305-949-6722

Exclusive First Look: Hakkasan Summer Menu

New dishes like a light and tangy salad and a black truffle roasted duck debut for summer.

June 28, 2013

Hakkasan, the acclaimed fine dining destination nestled on the Fontainebleau's fourth floor, has released new menu items for the summer season. Senior sous chef Chee Ping Chang's new dishes are masterfully presented, capturing both the elegance of the restaurant's ambiance and a well balanced mix of traditional and modern Chinese flavors. With options ranging from refined vegetable dishes to seafood, beef, duck and chicken, we especially like the light and tangy green salad with ginger and plum dressing. A tender black truffle roasted duck is also not to be missed, or for a truly light summer dish, try the steamed red snapper with lily flower and mushrooms. Other new menu items include a stir-fried venison with ginger and leek and appetizers like Peking duck with Petrossian caviar and Jasmine tea smoked short ribs, among others. Browse the slideshow above for a look at some of our favorites.
