Tequila Spices Up Classic Cocktails

The Corner's Smoky Tequila Negroni.
While excellent for sipping straight up, the complexity of artisanal tequilas can make for wonderful cocktails. Miami’s own Ezra Pattek, mixology consultant, pays a visit to The Corner and takes us through three tequila cocktails worth experiencing.
Smoky Tequila Negroni: “The Negroni is a classic drink traditionally made with gin and designed to stimulate the palate. In this case tequila replaces gin, showing how well the character of tequila can work with a bitter herbal liqueur such as Campari.”
Made with: Tequila Ocho Reposado, Campari, and sweet vermouth, with a mist of Pierde Almas Mezcal, finished with a zest of orange twist.
Añejo Old-Fashioned: “The old-fashioned is typically made with bourbon or whiskey. Añejo tequila has some of the same types of barrel notes. We highlighted the añejo with a cacao liqueur (for sweetness), added some amontillado sherry for the citrus and nutty components, and finished it with a few drops of mole bitters (a Mexican spice).”
Made with: Tequila Ocho Añejo, white crème de cacao liqueur, amontillado sherry, dashes of Xocolatlmole bitters, and lemon and orange zest.
Paloma Ladera: “Building on the traditional paloma, we added fresh herbs (basil), an herbal liqueur from France (yellow Chartreuse), and a few dashes of fennel bitters, demonstrating how tequila’s citrus and vegetal notes work well with fresh herbal ingredients.”
Made with: Tequila Ocho Plata, yellow Chartreuse, fresh grapefruit juice, fresh lime juice, basil, and fennel bitters, topped with soda water.
