Watches for Sportscar Enthusiasts
by roberta naas
Florida is synonymous with high-performance automobiles thanks to one of the premier racing events in America, the Daytona 500. The world’s most exotic makes are endlessly prowling Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue with head-turning effect, and now luxury watches named for these coveted vehicles are the hottest status symbol yet in a town that is captivated by the car. One brand is even taking it from the streets to the clouds as Porsche Design broke ground on a luxury residential tower this past April at Sunny Isles Beach. Residents of the 60-story tower—slated for completion in 2016—will be able to stay in their cars as they ride an auto-carrying elevator with a robotic arm to their home in the heavens. Luckily, after Miami men put it in park, they will still be able to wear a bit of auto-inspired luxury on their wrists.
ABOVE, FROM TOP: Amazing in its complexity, this Parmigiani Bugatti Vitesse watch ($328,000) houses the PF372 handwound movement with a two-plane caliber to offer the time on the side of the watch for ease of use while driving. The movement consists of 333 individual parts. Crafted in titanium, the watch is built with six antireflective sapphire crystals—no easy feat. The crown is set with a lapis lazuli cabochon. Each watch is individually numbered. Les Bijoux, 306 N. Plaza Real, Boca Raton, 561-361-2311; by appointment at Parmigiani Fleurier Distribution Americas, 999 Brickell Ave., Ste. 740, Miami, 305-260-7770. From Bulgari, this Octo Maserati watch ($32,100) is crafted in stainless steel and features a bold 45mm case. It offers an automatic quadro retrograde movement. The four retrograde indicators display the date and the seconds, and the chronograph, hours and minutes. When they have completed their cycles, the hands on each of these four displays immediately fly back to their starting positions to do it all again. Bal Harbour Shops, 9700 Collins Ave., 305-861-8898. This Porsche Design 6360 Flat Six Chronograph Automatic ($5,870) is crafted in stainless steel with a PVD black finish on the case and bracelet. The dial is carbon fiber to emulate high-tech automobile interiors. The watch features a tachymeter scale engraved on the inner bezel to measure speeds of 30 to 205 mph. Aventura Mall, 19501 Biscayne Blvd., 305-792-0091.
