Watch Trend: Thin Is In

Men's watches on display at the watch shows in Geneva take an elegant turn.

January 18, 2011

For men who love a classic, elegant look, one of the biggest trends this year in luxury watches is the refined ultra-thin watch. Even more prevalent than when they were first introduced in the 1940s, ultra-slim watches are sleek and offer a great look. Brands like Jaeger-LeCoultre and Piaget epitomize the style, but even Richard Mille and Parmigiani offer slim classics. Pictured here is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso UltraSlim Tribute to 1931.

Cartier Watches Impress

Our timepiece editor visits the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie and finds Cartier.

January 18, 2011

Yesterday marked the opening day of the 21st annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH)—the most prestigious by-invite-only timepiece trade show in the world, located in Geneva. One of the top “wows” of the day came from Cartier, which unveiled stunning new pieces from its high-jeweled and art collections. Among the standouts: jeweled bird watches, marquetry bears and dials festooned with stained glass polar bears and mosaic turtles (as pictured above).

Watches to Watch: Geneva

Our timepiece editor reports from the Geneva Time Exhibition.

January 17, 2011

I'm in Geneva for the first watch shows of the year. The Geneva Time Exhibition—which kicked off on Sunday—features independents showing their best and newest timepieces. And for those who love iPads and the virtual world, check out the HD3 Slyde digital watch (pictured above). Touch the screen and pull it down to view the watch movement and chronograph functions, or slide it sideways to view the images you upload. It's also totally water resistant. (Approximately $5,000.)

Model Lounge Pop-Up

Smartwater corrals Miami's most beautiful into The Raleigh Hotel.

January 10, 2011

If looking good really is hard work, Miami models are due for a break. Enter Smartwater's Model Lounge Miami, at The Raleigh Hotel, where the genetically blessed can kick off their four-inch heels, shoot the breeze and change clothes between castings and shoots. Who makes it in? Well, first you have to be female (sorry, guys) and second you have to bring your A-game. The lounge is only available for models signed to invited top 10 agencies.

Once you're in, perks include figure friendly refreshments from Smartwater and Popchips, a Model Lounge  Miami Privilege Card (good for discounts at stores like Intermix) and other free goodies. On opening day (January 6) models were gifted with Volcom bikinis and the following day they were treated to free brunch. The lounge is open now through the close of Miami Fashion Week (April 30th). 1775 Collins Ave., 800-848-1775

Project Style

Christian Siriano talks about his new accessories shopping site.

December 08, 2010

FROM RIGHT: Betty White crystal cuff, Dahlia pearl necklace and Rachel sapphire ring

Christian Siriano, Mariah Chase (Siriano’s manager) and Divya Gugani are eager to make online shopping a more social and personalized experience with their newly launched e-commerce site, Send the Trend. The website, dedicated solely to accessories shopping, uses style surveys to uncover the trends that best suit each member. Based on the survey, Send the Trend handpicks a monthly assortment of accessory recommendations and organizes them into the user's personal shopping gallery. We snagged a few moments with the in-demand designer to discuss his new jewelry collection (sold on the site) and the accessory staples every woman should have in her wardrobe.

OCEAN DRIVE: How do you choose the accessories on the site?
CHRISTIAN SIRIANO: Everyone on our team helps with choosing the pieces for the website. With the love it or hate it polls, we’re able to gauge customer preference. Fans are even able to name pieces.

What accessories never go out of style?
CS: A pearl necklace, aviators and a cocktail ring. Every woman has a different style, so for Send the Trend we’ve updated the classic pearl necklace and made it edgy, chunky and cool.

What are the hot accessories trends this fall?
CS: Whimsical jewel tones, classic aviators and an overly glam style. Different stones, jewels, gold and silver are brining a regal, rich and more elegant style forward.

What are your favorite pieces on the site?
CS: My favorite pieces would be the chunky gold regal ring and statement necklace. My Regal Estate capsule collection reflects the Dynastyquality that’s trendy this season. The inspirations for [that] collection are rich gold tones, chunky ‘80s pieces and vintage glamour.

A Bieber Biopic

A sneak peek at the pop phenom’s new 3D film.

December 04, 2010

On the heels of his appearance on the cover of Vanity Fairand what he called on Twitter “the most intense interview I ever did”—Justin Bieber is set to release his first film venture, Never Say Never, on February 11.

The film, titled after Bieber’s hit song of the same name, documents his rise from a small-town kid with little but passion and talent for music (he initially covered the likes of Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys and Brian McKnight) to one of the most buzzed about names in the music biz.

Early Bieber

His story is an incredible one, having launched himself to superstardom from his bedroom by posting YouTube videos of himself playing guitar and singing, and next month we’ll get to see it all in 3D. Bieber tweeted that the film is essentially about never giving up hope and believing in your dreams—and with millions of fans to back him up, we think he may be onto something
