There are many words that are synonymous with Miami. Sun, beach, colorful; the list of accolades is endless. But there are only a few names that singlehandedly convey that same sentiment. One of them is Gloria.
Gloria! For more than 50 years, the decorated artist has called Miami home, and we have been lucky to have her every step of the way. That’s why I’m proud to present Gloria Estefan as our September cover. The timing couldn’t be more appropriate: September 10 marks the release of her 27th album, The Standards, which will undoubtedly raise her tally of more than 100 million records sold. I can’t think of a better collaboration between two true Miami standards—Gloria Estefan and Ocean Drive.
Of course, what’s a September issue without fashion? This month, we have high fashion and profiles from the trendsetters who provide it, including Bal Harbour’s Matthew Lazenby and Neiman Marcus’s Ken Downing. We’re also shining the spotlight on some of Miami’s most detail-oriented style icons with an exposé of their unbelievably chic day-to-day lives, from an interior designer to a branding maven. And fashion can be giving. Who knew a previously loved Chanel bag could be sold for charity and ultimately send a child to camp for the summer? It’s possible, as we see in our “Spirit of Generosity” story on the fundraiser Fashionably Conscious.
As we slip into our fall trends, we reflect on the moments that sizzled this past summer season, from Swim Week to some incredible moments on the basketball court. Our Miami Heat secured a second consecutive championship, and we celebrated the win with a glorious downtown parade. An estimated 400,000 fans showed up, and I’m sure millions more watched from home. Much like Miami residents did on that day, Ocean Drive loves to celebrate what’s great about South Florida. Right now, we’re relishing a new real estate boom; cranes are building not only museums that will hold the future of our culture, but also the hotels, skyscrapers, and boutique luxury condos that will house the people coming to see them. It’s a great time to be in Miami.
