Brazilian identical twin artists Otavio and Gustavo Pandalfo, jointly known as Os Gêmeos, have transformed façades across the globe with their yellow-toned characters and whimsical sequences. The brothers grew up in São Paulo, Brazil and discovered their imaginative talents early on. "We drew all the time," explains Gustavo. "Our older brother is also an artist; he listened to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and influenced us very much." When hip-hop hit São Paulo in the early 1980s, Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash instantly reeled the brothers in with their infectious sounds. Soon the pair left their day jobs and pursued art full time. These days, Os Gêmeos' works can be found everywhere from Berlin to Miami's Wynwood Walls, as well as on the new Hennessy V.S Limited Edition bottle.
How did you become involved with Hennessy?
OG: We met Lenny, the artist known as Futura, who did the bottle before us. Then we took a tour of the [Hennessy] facility to understand the process.
What struck you about this project in comparison to others that you've done?
OG: We were happy to see how [Hennessy] has a lot of family tradition involved. That is important to us.
What inspired the bottle's illustration?
OG. It came together like a dream. We don't really explain our work, we like to leave it open to interpretation. The design is both our ideas mixed into one. There's a very long story, but we can't tell you. It's complicated.
In terms of the creative process, how do you work together?
OG: We both come up with the same ideas. We never disagree or argue—ever. We complement each other.
You reject the title "graffiti artist." Why?
OG: We never call [our work] street art or graffiti. It's particular. In doing galleries, we discovered we can create large environments. We're creating an environment.
Will we be seeing you around Art Basel in Miami Beach this year?
OG: Yes. We try to bring new pieces to Basel, at least two or three. We always come.
