Isabel and Ruben Toledo
The most anticipated duo descending upon the 2012 Miami Book Fair International are designer Isabel Toledo and illustrator Ruben Toledo. The couple, who have worked together for more than 25 years, will discuss their jointly penned memoir, Roots of Style: Weaving Together Life, Love, and Fashion,on November 11 (7 p.m.) inside the Freedom Tower.
The Toledos’ return to Miami comes with an air of nostalgia: it was here that the two entered the United States as children, arriving on our shores as Cuban political refugees before relocating to New York. Judith Thurman, staff writer for The New Yorker, will moderate the candid conversation, which will happen as "Toledo/Toledo: Full Circle" is being exhibited at Miami-Dade College. Opening Friday, November 9, the exhibit will comprise more than three decades of the couple’s designs, watercolors, sculptures, and archival footage inside the college's Museum of Art + Design. It will also touch on the process of creating Michelle Obama's iconic inauguration dress.
