Shoes We Love

Boots by Madewell catch our eye.

October 19, 2011

Madewell’s foundation may be in denim, but its future could be in boots. We fell in love with these Italian leather Watchtower boots ($249) and their stacked, 3¼-inch heel. 714 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, 305-534-8079

A Blanket Statement

A colorful blanket keeps us warm through rainy days.

October 19, 2011

Days of rain are perfect for items like movies and bowls of hot soup. We have also been keen on warm blankets, and Tina Ratzer’s geometric patterned offerings ($139) add the perfect pops of color. The wool blankets (made in Denmark) come in blue, yellow, red and light or dark gray. Gretelhome.com

Sunday Brunch: Mimosas and Pork

Asia de Cuba puts its Caja China Cuban roasters to work for a signature brunch.

October 19, 2011

Miamians are all too familiar with La Caja China roasting boxes, a traditional Cuban barbecue cooker that yields slow-roasted, fall-off-the-bone-tender pork. (La Caja Chinas are a staple at festivities such as Noche Buena.) Packing plenty of the Cuban cookers, Asia de Cuba at the Mondrian South Beach is now offering a Caja China Sunday Pork Roast brunch ($52, 12–4 PM). The regular brunch buffet and chef’s station is also included in the pork brunch. Bottomless mimosas, sangria and sparkling wines are also available ($25). 1100 West Ave., Miami Beach, 305-514-1940

Andy Warhol Apple on View

The Bass Museum pays tribute to Steve Jobs by way of Warhol.

October 18, 2011

Earlier this month, millions mourned the passing of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs: Memorials went up online, flowers and candles—along with poignantly bitten apples—were seen at Apple stores across the world and social media feeds were awash with condoling sentiments. Seeking to pay tribute to the technology pioneer in its own way, the Bass Museum of Art reached into its archives and brought out Andy Warhol’s Apple, a 38x38-inch silk-screen piece created in 1985 as part of Warhol's Ads Portfolio series. "Apple represents the work of two creative geniuses who are no longer physically with us yet remain very present," remarked George Lindemann Jr., president of the board of directors of the Bass Museum of Art. Apple will be on view in the Bass Museum's lobby through Saturday, November 5, 2011. 2100 Collins Ave., Miami Beach,  305-673-7530

Beauty Find: A-ttak! Studio

A new beauty studio teaches the art of professional makeup application.

October 18, 2011

The New York Times recently ran a story based on a study done at Harvard University, which found that wearing makeup “increases people’s perceptions of a woman’s likability, her competence and (provided she does not overdo it) her trustworthiness.” Enter Miami’s newest beauty hub: A-ttak! Fashion and Makeup Studio. Cosmetic industry veteran and studio founder Fred Vellon spent nearly two decades working for MAC Cosmetics, where he painted the faces of runway models, celebrities and musicians (Shakira, Alicia Keys, Cyndi Lauper and more). At A-ttak!, Vellon and his team offer glamorous makeup application sessions, as well do-it-yourself makeup workshops taught by experts and tailored to suit novices or near professionals. With 16 courses to choose from, we recommend the Modern Night workshop, which covers faux lash, liquid liner and lipstick application. 1410 20th St., Suite 215, Miami Beach, 954-604-4475

Tod’s Has a Brand New Bag

The Italian brand introduces its glossy new Signature Collection.

October 18, 2011

Three words spring to mind at the mention of Tod’s: Italian craftsmanship, comfort and sophistication. And with the launch of its newest line, the Signature Collection, Tod’s is infusing a healthy dose of glamour into its style DNA. Reminiscent of Louis Vuitton’s Monogram Vernis, the Tod’s Signature Collection pattern is ladylike and glossy. Available in red, black and blue hues, the playful and geometric design is imprinted onto the leather of each piece. Bal Harbour Shops, 9700 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour, 305-867-9399

Dispatch: VIPink Party

Miamians showed their support for breast cancer awareness and research at the Soho Beach House.

October 13, 2011

Lindsay Avner, Russell Simmons and Marie Charlotte

If everything seems Pretty in Pink this month that’s because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Last week, a flurry of pink descended on Soho Beach House for Bright Pink’s VIPink Party, where over 150 guests, including Russell Simmons, were treated to Grey Goose cocktails and swag from Gee, Intermix, La Martina, Peace Love World and more. However, the overwhelming number of men and women who showed up to support education and awareness of breast cancer was enough to topple the excitement over any measure of swag.

Bright Pink Miami board member (and Ocean Drive staffer) Jordana Mesner summed up her involvement with the non-profit and its year-round impact best: “I think it is just so important for young women to be more educated about their well-being. It is a matter of taking your health into your hands as opposed to just hoping it does not happen to you. Young women need to know their options.”

Diffusion Duds by Giambattista Valli

Macy’s hits high notes with Valli’s daring yet lovely capsule collection.

October 13, 2011

Just when we thought capsule collections had reached their peak (read: Missoni for Target, Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s), Macy’s leaks photos from its collaboration with Giambattista Valli, part of the department store’s Impulse line. First impressions point to sassy sophistication with crimson hues, leather and satin trim accents, animal prints and lots of lace.

In the collection, the Italian fashion house best known for its loyal client base, including one Victoria Beckham, kept true to the bright colors and unique patterns oft seen in its runway shows. Inspired by “the energy and vitality of women themselves,” the looks are bold, feminine and fashion forward. Tweeds, faux furs, point d’esprit tulle and brocade all flow seamlessly and reflect Valli’s trademark tailoring and couture sensibility. In a nod to the season, many of the pieces would make for perfect holiday party attire.

Valli's collection is the fourth of Macy's Impulse designer collaborations—it will also be the final 2011 Impulse line. The collection will be available at select Macy’s stores and online starting October 26.
