DJ Spotlight: DJ Jessica Who
We catch up with Miami’s own DJ Jessica Who.
August 30, 2011
DJ Jessica Who
If you caught the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night you probably caught a glimpse of Miami’s own DJ Jessica Who. We recently sat down with her to talk requests, Miami and more
You’re one of LIV’s resident DJs. What does it feel like to be at one of the hottest clubs in the country?
DJ JESSICA WHO: Playing at LIV is the best experience. I can handle any room in the world after this. At first I felt like a tiny fish in a huge pond but now I love it. It’s evolved too, and Wednesdays are fun and high energy. It’s my job to keep the party going. I play what people expect in a way they don’t expect.
What was your first gig?
DJW: I was 17 the first time I was exposed to the scene and I just fell into it. I knew it was what I wanted to do.
What is currently on your iTunes?
DJW: Cut Copy at the moment
What is your advice to up-and-coming DJs?
DJW: Make sure you’re in this for the right reasons. It takes so much work and you have to pay your dues.
What is the best advice you ever received?
DJW: My mom would always tell me it’s not the end of the world. When you’re young so much seems like it’s so major, and my mother would always remind me that it’s not the end of the world. And it wasn’t.
Is there anyone you would be nervous to play for?
DJW: Oh yeah, a lot of people. If you don’t have that humility and respect for your elders you’re missing a part of the game. I opened up for Laid Back Luke and that was awesome.
Do you take requests?
DJW: Yes, of course. But if you’re going to make a request make it fast, no life story, don’t sing to me, don’t ask me where the bathroom is. No, I don’t have a pen [or a] lighter. No, don’t hit on me, don’t touch me, don’t touch the turntables.
And finally, where is the best jukebox in Miami?
DJW: Kill Your Idol

Accessory Pick: Neon Givenchy
Step out with this atomic yellow bag and there’s no telling what might happen.
August 24, 2011
Made in France from buttery leather, this citrus-hued Givenchy flat pouch ($300) is the perfect way to ride out summer’s trend toward colorful, eye-popping fashions. Though it’s just shy of being large enough to fit an iPad, the sunny pouch is a great vehicle for necessary odds and ends on the go. And, in case the jaw-dropping shade stops traffic, the flipside of the pouch is black. The Webster, 1220 Collins Ave.

Fine Rides at the Concours d' Elegance
Automobile enthusiasts flocked to Pebble Beach for the annual, invite-only collector car show.
August 24, 2011
Being at the Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance—for any car lover—is like being in a very luxurious and wonderful dream. Thanks to an invitation from Rolex, I had the honor of visiting the 61st such event this weekend—in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the automobile.
Held on the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, the event is an invitation-only affair that brings together hundreds of the world’s most prized collector cars in one of the most exclusive and competitive events. Magnificently Restored and untouched preserved automobiles from the turn of the century and throughout the decades come together in all their glory in what is a breathtaking and mind-boggling experience. I spent hours on the Concours devouring the sites—wooden wheels of yesteryear in cars dating back to 1914, hood ornaments that leave one marveling at their very intricate detailing and intake manifolds and outer accents finished in golden hues.
From Duesnbergs to Stutz’s (which celebrates its 100 year anniversary), Edwardian-era Rolls-Royce’s , Packards, and the finest Ferrari 250 GTO’s (the automobiles produced from 1962 to 1964 that marked the culmination of Enzo Ferrari’s efforts to perfect this line), the Concours d’ Elegance recalls the glamour and growth that classic automobiles and fine racing vehicles brought to reality. If one can’t fulfill a passion for the architectural lines of the roadsters, grand touring and motorsports here, it probably won’t happen anywhere.
This year’s Best of Show Winner: A quite alluring 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne owned by Peter Mullin (owner of many vintage autos) and an entry in the 1932-1937 European Classic category. My Best of Show Pick: While I loved the Winner, the interior didn’t do the trick for me. I’m afraid I was a bit more staid. I loved a couple of the American Classics, including a light yellow 1934 Packard, the owner of which happened to be a friend of famed car restorer Wayne Carini, whom I met him at the show– but watch for more coming about and from Carini soon enough here at Atimelyperspective. Watch for more coverage here, too, of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Seca Raceway in the coming days.

New Plates: Joey’s Italian Café
Joey’s Italian Café in Wynwood adds new dishes to its menu.
August 18, 2011
Carpaccio del Bosco at Joey's Italian Café
An array of new dishes makes the rounds at Joey’s Italian Café. “Of course we are keeping the mainstays that our diners have always enjoyed,” says chef Ivo Mazzon. “But I wanted to add dishes utilizing the great, fresh ingredients we have access to, as well as some new pizzas and pastas.” Find classic additions like a traditional caprese (mozzarella, tomatoes, oregano, basil, extra virgin olive oil) and new pizza dishes like affumicatta (spinach, mozzarella, scamorza, sundried tomatoes, smoked salmon, hot pepper) and romana (tomato, mozzarella, stracchino, artichoke, porchetta). House-made pastas including gnocchi served with a choice of meat, tomato, pink or four-cheese sauce and fettucine carbonara (pancetta, eggs, parmesan, black pepper, a bit of cream). Fellini once said, “Life is a combination of magic and pasta.” We tend to agree. Joey’s Italian Café, 2506 N.W. 2nd Ave., Miami Wynwood, 305-438-0488
