Ocean Drive sat down with Feverish Ice Cream creator Felecia Hatcher to talk about ice cream and her new line of all-natural popsicles.
When did you start Feverish?
FELECIA HATCHER: My husband and I started the company in September 2008 after being laid off from marketing jobs with Nintendo. We had been toying with the idea for a while, but with my newfound freedom I figured that it was the perfect time to make a crazy dream a reality.
Did you always love ice cream?
FH: Oh my goodness, I have been obsessed with ice cream ever since I was a kid. Owning an ice cream company allows me to relive my childhood every day.
Do you have a culinary background?
FH: No culinary background. We just really love ice cream and what we do. My family is from Jamaica so some of the recipes are old family recipes.
Why did you opt for a truck rather than a shop?
FH: Well, while everyone is going big we decided to go small, and now even smaller with our new fleet of vintage carts. Mobile was the way to go for us because it allows us to bring Feverish to people anywhere. We currently serve the whole tri-county area and we even travel around the state.
Tell me about your new pops.
FH: Our new ice pop line is called Fever Pops. They’re fun, flirty flavors we really wanted to add a grown up twist to a childhood treat. We use all natural fruits and we get most of them from farmers markets. [And we use] all-natural sweeteners like agave and organic brown sugar. It's the way popsicles should be.
And you also make alcohol-infused pops, correct?
FH: Strawberry mojito, mojito, margarita and peach bourbon. When were carry them at street events they are non-alcoholic but for private events we spike them.

The lounge at Haven Gastro-Lounge
Lincoln Road welcomed chef Todd Erickson's much-hyped Haven Gastro-Lounge this weekend. Erickson's globe-trotting menu, made up entirely of small plates, features locally sourced ingredients with a molecular slant. Décor is futuristic and fun with scenes from nature and rock and roll projected onto the walls and 1,000 frosted ice cube-shaped lights dotting the ceiling.
Try the crackle-pop, a spicy tuna roll packed with crispy rice, diakon and yuzu schichimi aioli. And if you prefer turf to surf, the artisan sliders do not disappoint. Options include a classic prime beef and bacon slider topped with guacamole, tomato and Vermont cheddar; a duck and quail egg number with foie gras butter and parsley shallot salad; and a lamb burger slightly sweetened by lavender-coriander honey and apple fennel slaw with ouzo mustard. If you’re going the slider route, you might also try Erickson’s grown up tater tots with bleu cheese, chives and balsamic ketchup.
Cocktails, served at a Siberian onyx bar, are complex and delicious. If you like a little spice, go for the Fever made with jalapeño-infused Grey Goose La Poire, lychee and pear prosecco. Given our fascination with all things celebrity we’re excited to have Celebrity Autobiography arrive at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts this month (through May 15). In the show, comedians like Mario Cantone and Rachel Dratch will perform hilarious vignettes ripped from the headlines and celebrity biographies. In past performances, celebrity drama on display has been inspired by the foibles of Tiger Woods, Madonna, Tommy Lee and more. "Audience members are always asking if we made it up, but it's all real. We could not make up the stuff if we tried," says Eugene Pack, the show's creator.

Last week The Society hosted a private screening of Bill Cunningham New York at O Cinema in Wynwood. In the spirit of the fashionable film, we asked Ashleigh Dempster and Amanda Blakley, co-founders of The Society, a few questions.
Your offices are in Toronto. What is trending there at the moment?
ASHLEIGH DEMPSTER AND AMANDA BLAKLEY: Toronto is changing on the fashion front. People are much more daring and adventurous with their fashion choices than ever before, and we’re loving every minute of it! Like Bill Cunningham’s subjects, Toronto street trends are all about individual style—mixing high-end with low-end, new with vintage, punk with florals. You get the picture. In addition, the international fashion spotlight is finally shining on Canadian fashion designers as we have an incredible pool of talent coming out of our country including Mark Fast, Erdem, Jeremy Laing and Greta Constantine. All are penetrating the overall fashion seen and spurring new trends unique to our cities.
Where do you shop when you’re in Miami?
AD & AB: Our trips to Miami are usually a whirlwind with very little time to shop. We’re also still fairly new to the city so always on the hunt for those local favorites and little gems of boutiques. That being said though, The Webster is a trusted source when needing some fun pieces to spice up the wardrobe. We also love The Alchemist, the Tuck Shop at the Raleigh, Killiwatch and The Standard Boutique.
What are your must-have accessories and must-wear colors for spring?
AD & AB: Bring on the bolds and brights. With a head office in Toronto and a chapter in New York, we’ve suffered from a long, dark and gray winter, [which is] why we get so excited to attend our Miami chapter events! For color, both of us are obsessed with florescent shades of coral and yellow. And for accessories, since we never leave home without our laptops, the big bright shoulder bag is an essential to the spring wardrobe.
Describe your spring style in five words or less.
AD & AB: Playful, comfortable, colorful and spontaneous.
What is the secret to dressing for a day that starts with meetings and ends with cocktails?
AD & AB: Accessorizing and individual pieces. Dresses are the easiest to carry you through day to night. For daytime, we’ll usually throw a little jacket over a cute dress and pair with some fun stockings. Our favorite is Animal Tulle from DKNY Hosiery Spring 2011 collection. Once the sun goes down, we lose the jacket, throw on a killer pair of heels and some good earrings, darken the eyes and we’re off for a night of fun with our friends!

Beauty buffs can now head to the revamped Body Shop in Aventura Mall. After a month of renovations, the store is a sleeker, more modern version of itself that debuted with celebrity makeup artist Shalini Vadhera giving complimentary spring makeovers using the new limited-edition cruelty free collection. “I’m all about empowering women and this makeup does that,” she says. “It has a natural moisturizer called marula oil which is sourced from the Owumbo women of Namibia.” Also new to the store is Shower Gels for Earth Lovers, a line of six gels (including apricot and basil, watermelon and eucalyptus and mint and cucumber) containing organic aloe vera from Guatemala. April is National Poetry Month, and Miami is playing along with its own month-long, countywide poetry festival: O, Miami. The goal of the festival is simple: to have every person in Miami-Dade County encounter a poem sometime during the month. Next week Yale presents readings based on the newly published Anthology of Rap, Literary Death Match showcases its literary geared competitive spirit, and James Franco proves his talents go beyond General Hospital in Poetry and Persona. The game of polo and the city of Miami have a long relationship dating back to 1919, when Carl Fisher’s Flamingo Polo Club opened on Miami Beach. This weekend approximately 8,000 people will continue the tradition by attending the seventh annual AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup, the world’s largest and most prestigious beach polo tournament. The waterfront event (April 21–24) takes place between 20th and 22nd Streets on the sands of South Beach, and general admission is free (VIP tickets range from $100 to $150 and allow entrance to the shaded grandstand complete with complimentary drinks and bites).
