Once you’ve seen Afrobeta in concert, you understand why Cuci (pronounced coo-see) Amador is Miami’s own blend of Joan Jett, Debbie Harry, Celia Cruz and Chrissie Hynde. She doesn’t just inhabit a stage, she electrifies the space whether it’s an intimate concert for visiting Nylon editors or a packed stadium at an internationally acclaimed festival. She’s an ambassador of what real Miami girls can be: a powerful and charming mixture of talent, smarts and witty sass paired with old-fashioned manners. As Afrobeta prepares to perform at the sold-out Ultra Music Festival, Amador took time to answer a few questions.
What other festivals are you attending this year?
Last year was a huge festival year for us. We played Ultra Miami, Glastonbury, Ibiza, Burning Man and Ultra Brazil. Glastonbury was a huge lifetime achievement and I hope to make it there every year from now on! I love going to Coachella for all the amazing music. This year we are going to play a pool party as part of the Valley festivities.
What have you been listening to a lot lately?
You worked with Calle 13 on their Grammy award-winning “Electro Movimiento." Any other collaborations on the horizon?
I love collaborating. We recorded a couple of weeks ago with Telekinetic Walrus and we’re going into the studio next week to record on a track with The Hongs. Let’s see what that turns into!
You’re known for your style as well as your music. What are your favorite places to shop?
Deco Dermot, Art of Shade, Krelwear, Goodwill and Marshalls.
Does your fashion style morph a little with each new album?
Fashion is a fun extension of my mood swings. So the answer is yes!
