Hedy Goldsmith, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink
Hedy Goldsmith is Miami’s reigning pastry queen. As the breakout talent at Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink (and before that, at Nemo, Shoji Sushi, and Prime One Twelve), she turns out creations that are seductively elegant, nostalgic, and classic enough to weaken the defenses of even the most avowed dessert avoider. Goldsmith’s decidedly unstuffy approach has made her a rock star in Miami food circles and beyond. Much of that attitude comes, perhaps, from her professional origins outside the world of haute cuisine.
“I started cooking in restaurants while attending art school. My days were filled with painting, glass-blowing, and designing furniture, while nights were filled with prepping vegetables, making soup, and designing the evening menu,” Goldsmith recalls. “Art school gave me the tools to focus in on my craft, which enabled me to build the foundation that has helped me grow as an artist-pastry chef—they are one and the same to me.”
Artistic they may be, but above all, Goldsmith’s creations are fun and delicious. Fan favorites have included upscale takes on Oreos, Nutter Butters, and even Pop-Tarts—the latter a flaky, fruit- or chocolate-filled toaster tart that left New York Times food critic Frank Bruni swooning. “I think childhood memories of our favorite sweets bring us back to a simpler, happy place,” she says. “Maybe I was rebelling against froufrou, fussy desserts, and I just wanted good, old-school ‘womb food.’ They hit every mark: salty and sweet, decadent and fun.” 130 NE 40th St., Miami, 305-573-5550
