Location, Location, Location
On the mainland, look for Villa Mayfair’s Frederic Joulin of Michelin-starred Guy Savoy fame, and veteran Miami chef Norman Van Aken, whose namesake restaurant in Coral Gables was a casualty before its first birthday, has launched a spot called Tuyo at the sleek new Miami Culinary Institute. It’s a boon to downtown diners, who can sample reasonably priced local/ Latin fare in a stunning rooftop setting.
Location is subjective. The revamped Pearl Restaurant & Champagne Lounge at Nikki Beach Club at One Ocean Drive has a sexy beachfront setting and a clubby white, orange-accented décor with DJs. Some would debate whether those are pros or cons. But who could argue with the cachet of Herzog & de Meuron’s 1111 Lincoln Road, the locale for Juvia, due to open in the coming weeks on the penthouse level of the parking garage? Owners Jonas and Alexandra Millan have assembled an impressive crew, headed by chef de cuisine/ partner Laurent Cantineaux, a protégé of Daniel Boulud. Plus, it’s the only restaurant I’ve ever known that has its own botanist—brought in to tend the vertical garden encompassing the 10,000-squarefoot indoor/outdoor space. Now, that’s something!
