Private jeweler. All in the family: Diamonds are more than this girl’s best friend—they are a part of her DNA. “Jewelry is in my blood. My entire family is in the business. We’re fifth generation,” says Simkins of her inherited career. “I expanded the retail part of our company and sell privately to customers.” Her keen eye for design attracts clients ranging from starlets to singers to socialites, such as Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Loren and J.R. Ridinger and Linda and Barry Gibb. Out with the old, in with the new: “When I design, it’s mainly updating people’s jewelry—they want a new, fresh idea. Say it’s an engagement ring. I’ll redesign it by upgrading the stone or redoing the mounting.” Balancing it all: Simkins may be a designer with a pedigree in gemology, but she’s quick to point out, “I’m a mom first, but I do this because it’s social and very fun.” Not to mention very glamorous. —Tish Johnson Cook

Founder, BloqUV activewear. Surefire sunscreen: “The clothing industry may be in tune with our athletic needs, but not our health needs,” points out Biton, 44, whose line of activewear features an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 50. (UPF is fabric’s answer to sunscreen’s SPF.) Boardroom to boardwalk: Biton, a Puerto Rico native who has lived in Miami since age six, spent much of her life in the corporate world, working for IBM, SunTrust and Neiman Marcus before going solo with her own public-relations business. Her newly free schedule allowed for daily runs on the Miami Beach boardwalk, but also came with a warning from her dermatologist: “She told me I needed to wear sunscreen under my clothes, since regular fabrics only offer a UPF of about 5. Since I couldn’t find fashionable, functional activewear, I created my own.” No tan is a healthy tan: A year after her “Aha!” moment, she’s selling at the Lapis Spa at the Fontainebleau, FootWorks, several dermatologist’s offices and online at bloquv.com. —Suzy Buckley
