We do a lot of celebrating in this town. From NBA championships to groundbreakings to, well, Friday nights at the VIP table in the club—there’s a lot of Champagne. Now, I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions, and while most people say that, something about being in Miami leads me to believe that fulfilling a resolution might actually be easy. The whole point of resolutions is to better yourself, the world, the people and community around you. Isn’t that the reason for being in Miami in the first place, for something better? There’s nothing stopping us here.
Better is a goal we strive for at Ocean Drive, as a team and magazine, month after month. Personally, however, it’s a task that pushes us beyond the ordinary, requiring that we always search for new ways to innovate. And after another momentous and absolutely astonishing Art Basel for the city of Miami, we see that nothing is impossible. Art and creativity flourish in this town. Efficiency, teamwork, and out-of-the-box thinking built and launched one of the country’s most talked-about museums with Pérez Art Museum Miami. If you want to give back, look no further than Michael Capponi and the Haiti Empowerment Mission, a charity born right here in Miami, or at the scores of other local charities and opportunities for making a difference both at home and globally. If you want to eat better, look better, feel better, live better, we have it all in Ocean Drive, and we have it all in Miami Beach.
Yes, we all have so much going on that sometimes it’s hard to focus on improving ourselves and the lives of those around us. Much as it does for our January cover star, wife, new mom, and actress Jenna Dewan Tatum, life can get a little hectic. But there are amazing things happening here right now: new buildings, new neighborhoods, new ideas. Everyone’s coming, from the innovators to the creators, developers, investors, philanthropists.... even the stars, from athletes to actors—and they are all aspiring to greatness. If they’re doing it, so can you. Here’s to a fantastic 2014. May it be everything, and more, that 2013 was for me, Ocean Drive, and this town.
