The “slightly slower season,” as I like to call it, means a smidgen less traffic—and this year, a lot more attention to the newly named Miami Marlins. Not only do they have some fresh talent in the field and an outspoken new manager who’s learning the hard way about local political passions, but also a big, smart, and oh-so-talked-about new stadium that’s less than two miles from downtown—not a bad after-work jaunt, if you ask me. The ballpark has 37,442 seats that are among the closest to the playing field in all of baseball! And the clever idea to build a retractable roof makes it impossible for Miami’s rainy season to put a damper on the city’s team spirit.
These next few months give locals the chance to experience the city in a way they might not during high season: as a tourist. When you live in a coveted destination, sometimes it just makes sense to stay local…. and enjoy a staycation. The spike in new hotels has raised the bar in our town, bringing in big-name chefs and designers, and making Miami even more interesting. With the SLS Hotel South Beach opening its doors in May, and the relaxed ambience at iconic hotels such as the Fontainebleau Miami Beach and Delano South Beach, I am genuinely looking forward to being a tourist in my hometown.
Zuma has easily become one of my favorite restaurants since it opened its doors, so I’m excited to celebrate its two-year anniversary this month. Also, on May 19, Ocean Drive is cohosting the Levinson Jewelers Ultimate Watch Fair with a meet-and-greet with NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino. Later that same evening, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will celebrate its 10th annual FedEx/St. Jude Angels & Stars Gala, hosted by Grammy Award winner Juanes and his wife, television host and actress Karen Martínez. He’s a perfect fit, as this gala is known for picking great entertainment that gets the crowd off their banquet chairs and onto their feet. To find out more about St. Jude, be sure to check out this issue’s Spirit of Generosity.
Hope to see you around town enjoying the relaxed days of summer….
