CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Bobby Flay’s food is phenomenal, and his heart is huge. Last month, he donated an entire weekend of his time to personally cook dinners for the winners of an auction that raised $146,000 for the American Cancer Society; with Siri Willoch Traasdahl, Sara Colombo, and Tenelle McCormack at Nest; actor Olivier Martinez hosted a recent Ocean Drive dinner party at his Miami Beach restaurant, Villa Azur; French Vogue’s New York correspondent, Carole Sabas, was just in town scouting ideas for her new book, Miami, The Fashion & Friendly Guide, which debuts during Art Basel Miami Beach. Here we are talking shop at Ocean Drive Style Editor John Joseph Lin’s birthday party
Are you as tired of this trend toward inane “city rankings” as I am? It was interesting the first five times (maybe), but now I don’t care whether some random daily-deal website newsletter poll determines that Miami is the “third-sexiest city in the world,” the “14th-smartest city in America,” “the 34th-least-boring city on the East Coast,” or “the warmest city with the 20th-best sense of humor outside of Canada.” Even bloomberg.com wasn’t above cashing in on this fad, in an effort to rack up a few retweets. (It worked.) In a recent credibility-busting move, the site listed Tulsa, Cleveland, and Milwaukee among its new list of America’s best 50 cities, while Miami didn’t even make the cut. Excuse us?
If you’re reading this issue in our town this month, you know you’re in the right spot, whether you’re seeking gorgeous weather, social action, or both. Over the next few weeks alone, we’re going to the Make-A-Wish Ball, then to Destination Fashion, where Enrique Iglesias is performing live and designer Peter Dundas himself is showing Emilio Pucci’s Spring 2013 collection. A few days later, Madonna’s in town on her MDNA tour, which is sure to tear the roof off the AmericanAirlines Arena. And did I mention November 30 marks the official end of hurricane season?
As we prepare to celebrate Ocean Drive’s 20th anniversary in 2013, it’s fun to see Miami getting more play than ever in Hollywood…. although I’m using the word “Hollywood” loosely in some of the following cases. Iron Man 3, starring Robert Downey Jr., is filming down the street as I type; the fabulous Starz show Magic City is shooting its second season all around town; Burn Notice just wrapped its sixth season, which airs November 8, and—thanks to the recent Miami City Commission’s signoff—is likely to start taping again next spring; Kourtney and Kim are back here “taking Miami”; and The Real Housewives of Miami is generating buzz (one fan tweeted, “This show is like an Ocean Drive infomercial!,” which I loved), as is the gripping new Travel Channel series Airport 24/7: Miami (I wonder if The Shoppes at Ocean Drive at gate D-17 gets any play?). Stay in touch—tweet, friend, like, watch, and read us—and you’ll have a front-row seat for it all.
