Founders of LuLu Rae

GABRIELLE MARCUS AND SAMANTHA SCHINMAN
Founders and designers, LuLu Rae New York
Ages: 29 and 26, respectively. Provenance: London.
Miami connection: Born overseas, raised in Miami and now living in New York City, sisters and best friends Gabrielle Marcus and Samantha Schinman always knew that one day they’d collaborate on an exciting enterprise. It was during one of their many trips here that the plan to venture into jewelry design was hatched. “We were just walking and talking by The Setai, where the boardwalk ends,” Marcus explains. “This jewelry-line baby was conceived there.” Story time: LuLu Rae (taken from the sisters’ middle names, Louise and Rae) is a line of necklaces featuring three animal charms (an elephant, a butterfly and a duck) in semiprecious stones such as white agate, blue lapis and mother-ofpearl, with diamond eyes and 14k-gold trim. The sophisticated production is complemented by whimsical touches—each animal comes with a background story, for instance (Molly, the duck, lives in London and was born in a palace….). The designs are numbered and limited to only 150 per style, adding to the collection’s air of exclusivity. “It’s like a small work of art,” Marcus says. “No one will have the same piece that you do.” Sister, sister: Some people might struggle in a family business, but sibling rivalry is all but nonexistent here. “There are no insurmountable challenges that arise from our working together,” Schinman says. “We love it.”
