“Illustrious couple MERCEDES and MAURICE FERRÉ have helped put this city on the map. He is originally from Puerto Rico, where his uncle was governor, and she from Venezuela; they met at 18 and wed at 20. Through the 1970s and ’80s, Maurice was one of Miami’s most successful mayors, famously bringing Latin-American companies to town; he is currently running for the US Senate as a Democrat. In addition, their incredible former family home—a showplace on Brickell Avenue—is now the clubhouse for the Santa Maria condominium building.”
