Ranjana Khan is known as much for her big, bold, and stunningly beautiful jewelry, as she is for her marriage to couture designer Naeem Khan. Her modern, Indian-inspired collection—favored by the likes of Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, and first lady Michelle Obama—became an overnight success when it debuted in fall 2008. In addition to red-carpet appearances, Khan’s designs have also been seen in a capsule collection for The Limited and on models in husband Naeem’s runway shows. This week, Khan will be in town for not one, but three Neiman Marcus trunk shows to celebrate her latest collection, which was inspired by Miami.

Your spring collection is very vibrant and textural. What inspired those designs?
RANJANA KHAN: The spirit of the Miami. I wanted to design a collection inspired by and tailored for us women to wear in Miami—vibrant colors, playful silhouettes, and statement pieces that embody this amazing city. Since Miami was the inspiration for the season, it was a goal of mine to bring a strong presentation of the pieces to the women I made it for. What better way than to partner with Neiman Marcus and have several days of fun in the store with the jewelry?
You have so many celebrity fans. Is there one in particular that resonates with you?
RK: I’m thankful to have the following I do, but I’d have to say Michelle Obama, hands down. When she wore one of my necklaces in India for the first time, I was there as well. For me to be in my home country having the first lady of the United States wearing my jewelry, it was such a validating moment in my career.
When it comes to designing, what’s the synergy like between you and Naeem?
RK: We are completely separate from one another when it comes to our design careers. I do my collection and creative accessories for my woman and he does the same for his. Although we do separate collections, sometimes it works out organically that he uses my jewelry to style his runway shows, which is always a wonderful collaboration.
Are any new creative projects on the horizon?
RK: Right now I’m really focused on my jewelry. In fact, we’re bringing back some of my standout bestsellers to present a truly classic Ranjana Khan collection.
What are your Miami haunts?
RK: The Standard for yoga. Soho Beach House for a beach day. Juvia is a fab new restaurant. And I consider The Webster the best store in Miami.
