Patrick and Fabrice Tardieu
With a headquarters in Miami and distribution in two major doors (Neimans, Nordstrom), designing brothers Fabrice and Patrick Tardieu are quickly turning their shirt line, Bogosse, into a menswear empire.
Translated from French (the Tardieus are from Haiti), Bogosse means “handsome,” and the line lives up to its name. Bogosse's signature dress shirts are handwoven from Italian fabrics and pure cotton with patented square buttons, while the fall/winter collection flaunts strong collars, leather cuffs, and bold prints.
We spoke to the brothers Tardieu following trunk shows at Neiman Marcus Merrick Park and Bal Harbour to talk about men’s fashion, the challenges of working with your sibling, and Miami style.
Describe your relationship. How does being brothers affect your work?
PATRICK TARDIEU: It’s difficult, but I wouldn't have it any other way. My brother and I are a yin and a yang; totally different personalities, therefore we complement each other. We separate the tasks and assume our own responsibilities. We utilize each other's strengths and weaknesses for the benefit of our common enterprise.
What are the key elements necessary for making the perfect shirt?
FABRICE TARDIEU: Making the perfect shirt consists of four basic elements. The first is the ability to choose the right balance of fabrics and patterns that will attract people and buyers at first sight. Secondly, [it’s about a] cut that will elongate the silhouette and camouflage the less desirable attributes. Third, the versatility of the look, the ability to dress it up or down with the appropriate accessories. And fourth, being passionate about your craft, the art of making shirts. You need to absolutely love what you do. It's one of the major components of success.
What are your favorite fabrics to work with?
FT: I love to work with satin for the vibrant and bold shine it has to it, and for its super soft touch. That's why you find it in all of our collections, every season.
How does Miami influence your designs?
PT: The weather, the sun, the beach, the ocean, the Art Deco style, the sports arenas, and the different culture. This is the imprint of Miami, so it's not surprising that you find color, life, freshness, vibrance, and contrast in our collections. However, given that we are a global brand, we also have to adapt some of our ideas in style, design, and color to the more conservative and subdued markets of Europe and the Middle East.
What's the one thing every man should stock in his wardrobe?
PT: A shirt is a staple in every man’s wardrobe. Having an elegant, trendy, versatile one paired with a beautiful watch, a classy belt, and a pair of elegant dress shoes makes a big difference in the overall appearance of a man.
