Men's Suit Shops: The New Standards

Rarely do Pitbull, Tom Ford, and Dwyane Wade have anything in common, but they, along with more and more Miami men, are singing the praises of a well stitched suit. Suits have been slimmer and sharper for some time now, and no longer represent stodgy corporate life but rather chic sophistication. Options are plentiful in our city, from standards such as Noble Experiment (700 W. 51st St., Miami Beach, 917-291-0155) to the newly expanded Saint Laurent boutique at Bal Harbour Shops (9700 Collins Ave., 305-868-4424). Saint Laurent’s redesign, by Hedi Slimane, includes an extra 1,000 square feet devoted to men’s ready-to-wear and accessories, with hallmarks of the brand such as black leather, brass, glass, and marble. Over in the Design District, Parisian fashion house Berluti (161 NE 40th St., Miami, 305-573-4170) has opened its first US boutique, where in-the-know Miamians will be among the first to purchase its covetable ready-to-wear Stateside. Created with a private gentleman’s retreat, the design movement, and Miami’s tropical climate in mind, the store features touches reflective of all three.
A glamorous yet sensible addition to any wardrobe, the suit is a way for Miami men to make a serious fashion statement. “Wearing a suit doesn’t mean you have to feel like you’re in a stuffy Madison Avenue boardroom,” says Stevie the Tailor (aka Stevie Fellig) (347-921-2575), who tailors for the most discerning of men in New York and Miami. “When I design collections for my clients in Miami, I like to infuse a slightly more laid-back feel.” Horacio LeDon of Douglas Elliman real estate says a suit’s lines carry serious messaging, particularly in Miami. “My suits are the embodiment of the buildings I represent: clean, modern, and well designed. It’s what sets apart what I do from, say, a banker or lawyer.”
As Miami continues to grow as a true center of commerce, business, and design, expect to see the suit and its many variations keep turning up the heat on South Beach and beyond.
