Music Moves Fall Fashion
BY LAUREN FINNEY
From punk to rock to even heavy metal, music is making its mark on fashion this season, and several designers have let their inner David Bowie out to drive their collections for fall.
In an extensive tribute to not only British craftsmanship and heritage but also the Beatles, Bloomingdale’s (Aventura Mall, 19555 Biscayne Blvd., 305-792-1000) has tapped more than 50 British designers to contribute to its stores. Beatlemania is brought back to life yet again with exclusive pieces such as the Hardy Amies charcoal George Harrison suit ($1,195) and black John Lennon tuxedo ($1,295) (Sir Paul McCartney-and Ringo Starr-inspired suits are also available), and Turnbull & Asser’s Beatles album-cover-printed pocket squares ($150). The dapper lines of the suits give a nod to Miami’s own ’60s swank. “Music is so important when it comes to fashion,” says Kevin Harter, VP for fashion direction of men’s, home, and bloomingdales.com. “Some of our earliest fashion icons were the great musicians of the ’60s, whether it was the Beatles, Elvis Presley, or the Rolling Stones. In today’s world, an introduction of a music video is often the beginning of a great fashion trend.”
Designer John Varvatos agrees (1020 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, 305-674-7917). “I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for the music I discovered growing up in Detroit in the late 1960s and 1970s,” he says. In exploring his relationship with music, Varvatos has written John Varvatos: Rock in Fashion, featuring more than 250 images, some never before seen, of artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Iggy Pop—who resides in Miami. “The photos of Iggy still fascinate and inspire me—his stagewear had a cool glam rock vibe that was both masculine and feminine rolled into one.” The book is available now at Varvatos’s Lincoln Road location.
Newly opened men’s boutique Supply & Advise (3322 N. Miami Ave., Miami, 305-846-9437) will also be carrying a Detroit rock-inspired collection from Levi’s Vintage Clothing, which draws on the brand’s success in the 1960s and ’70s with the Orange Tab line. Look for reversible leather jackets, stonewashed denim, ringer tees, and more to add a hit base line to your wardrobe.
