Nars Conjures the Colors of Miami
by kaitlin clark
Makeup maestro James Boehmer has spent 16 years climbing the ranks at NARS Cosmetics, ultimately becoming its director of global artistry. Here, he talks about the brand’s latest product, NARS Loves Miami, a collection featuring our city’s favorite shades of eyeshadow, blush, bronzer, varnish, and gloss. The four dynamic, highly pigmented eyeshadow shades—shimmery pink, rich chestnut, electric violet, and deep cinnamon—allow for versatile day-to-night looks, while cult favorites Laguna bronzer and Orgasm blush are universally flattering. The matching pearly-peach Orgasm lip gloss and nail varnish complete the set. The palette hits stores in November.
Why did you decide to work for NARS?
I’ve been with the brand since almost the very beginning. François Nars is really one of the reasons I wanted to be a makeup artist in the first place.
What was the inspiration behind the Miami palette?
The colors in the palette are really based on the most popular colors in Miami; they’re truly our best sellers in this market.
There are many NARS products that are inspired specifically by South Beach, such as the tangerine-tinged South Beach multiple, which can be used as a blush, bronzer, or highlighter. The peach and golden shimmer Key Largo eyeshadow duo was also inspired by the area.
Why did you go in a vibrant, edgy direction with this collection?
It has to be! Miami women are really confident about their fashion, their makeup, and their style; it’s quite exuberant. Women here show a little bit more skin, they have a bit more fun, they’re not so serious, and that spirit is reflected in the colors. It’s a little brighter, a little bolder, and it makes perfect sense.
The range of colors really allows for experimentation.
It’s not a dictation of how you should wear your makeup, but rather the possibility of how you might wear it. François believes makeup is just another expression of self, reflective of your mood, your feelings. It doesn’t always have to be so serious—have fun with it! Miami women really get that.
