Can't wait for Design Miami/ 2013? Coming up next month, on October 12, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale (MOAFL) examines the evolution of woodwork in "Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design." With 90 works created by 57 international artists, the exhibit juxtaposes modern design and organic beauty. All of the pieces, which are being transported from New York's Museum of Arts and Design, where the exhibit debuted, are presented in a natural or stained state and feature innovative shapes, techniques, and forms. "We took a lot of cliches and platitudes to get your attention," explains curator Lowery Stokes Sims. "I think all of these different [works] cause you to rethink what you assume wood can do and what wood is." Indeed, artists represented in the show include New York's Alison Elizabeth Taylor and China's Ai WeiWei. 2014. 1 E. Las Olas Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale, 954-525-5500
