Independent watchmaker Dubey & Schaldenbrand is a company that prides itself on blending history and current day. As such, it has proudly curated treasured movements from the 1950s, '60s and '70s that inspire its newest creations.
Now, this manufacturer has done it again with the Grand Dôme R92. This limited-edition chronograph combines vintage movements and modern design with impeccable craftsmanship. The chronograph watch is crafted in a stainless steel signature tonneau-shaped case. It houses the special edition R92 movement that was originally fabricated in the 1950s and was purchased decades ago from the predecessor of Valjoux and ETA. The column wheel is a distinct characteristic of the R92 chronograph movement, and features a traditional method of synchronizing the chronograph components, incorporating a unique swivel pinion design that was created by Edouard Heuer in 1886. It is also unusual in that the ratchet is on the dial side along with a crown mechanism with rocker bar. The fully in-house assembled timepiece features hand engravings on the skeletonized R92 movement that are visible through the sapphire crystal. The hour and minute hands provide an antique gothic look with pear-shaped tips.
Given the mastery of craftsmanship, design, and the availability of the vintage movement, the R92 will be limited to 16 pieces in stainless steel. You’ll want to run, not walk, to the nearest authorized dealer because this beauty is a steal at $16,700.
