Inspired by their past and by a desire to offer architectural appeal, many watch brands are releasing classic but updated watches in rectangular shapes. The rectangular, square, and tonneau- (or barrel-) shaped cases are all retro in nature, with many of these shapes dating back to the first era of wristwatches, in the early 1900s.
“There is a strongly renewed interest in vintage style and architectural design of square, rectangular, and tonneau-shaped watches,” says Jono King of King Jewelers. “Miamians have a love of midcentury design that is updated to encompass the best of what is new. Timepieces like the Dubey & Schaldenbrand combine the best of these elements and are in high demand with our clients.”
At once timeless and casually elegant, these highly distinctive architectural watch shapes offer a great combination of design and relaxed living. By turning to their archives for design inspiration and adding subtle modern touches, watch brands deftly make what is old new again.
