Why not welcome 2019 with a visit to one of Miami’s newest eateries? We’ve rounded up several spots offering a variety of ethnic cuisines that will be sure to spice up your dining routine.
Since launching in November, Fiola has already become a favorite locale for Miami’s most discerning foodies. Set within an elegantly appointed Coral Gables space, the new arrival is led by Michelin-starred Chef Fabio Trabocchi, who presents a modern take on Italian cuisine. Standout dishes include the bison tartare, artfully arranged on a wooden board akin to a painter’s palette, and the house-made lobster ravioli. When you go, save room for dessert. Although this Midtown Miami haunt first opened last summer, Chef Brian Nasajon recently debuted a new dinner menu and also introduced Boombox, a bar and lounge located next door. The dining concept evokes Nasajon’s Uraguayan and Jewish heritage, as menu items range from cheese poppers made with oaxaca, pineapple chili and bacon, to pastrami on rye, an ode to the well loved deli sandwich that’s instead made with rye pasta, pastrami carbonara, and black pepper. The newest restaurant to join the burgeoning food scene in the Wynwood Arts District is Bakan, which means “tortilla” in the Huasteca region of Mexico. Therefore, it’s appropriate that the space is both centered on art, and features an open kitchen where guests can view the tortilla-making process. Heading up the kitchen is Chef Oscar del Rivero, who’s combining traditional Mexican cuisine with a contemporary twist to delight patrons with dishes like cangrejo rey de Alaska (Alaskan King crab tacos), huachinango entero (whole local red snapper), and mole de olla divorciado (short rib stew). 2801 NW 2nd Ave., Miami, (305) 396-7080, bakanwynwood.com
Slated to open later this month in Midtown Miami, Maska is the brainchild of Chef Hemant Mathur. The first Indian chef in the United States to receive a Michelin star, Mathur is known for his prowess with the traditional Indian clay oven. While this waterfront eatery is not in Miami per se, it’s only about a 45-minute drive (or better yet, a Brightline ride) away. Situated on Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Boulevard, Casa Sensei offers guests the opportunity to dine al fresco or hop aboard a gondola for a private dinner cruise. In addition to providing a totally unique experience, the menu of Pan Asian comfort food—think ramen, dim sum, sushi and Latin-inspired bites—is bound to make it a new favorite destination. 1200 E.
