Alteronce Gumby’s (@alteroncegumby) new mural installation, “Living the Dream,” demonstrates a vibrant exploration of color and arrives in the Design District just in time for Miami Art Week. Serving as the New York City-based artist and filmmaker’s first outdoor public project and largest work yet, the permanent installation represents a leap in his creative journey.
Promising to transform the space with its visual appeal, Gumby seamlessly utilized carefully selected gemstones chosen for their symbolic properties, including green jade, turquoise, red jasper, black obsidian and fossilized shark teeth from a Southwest Florida-based collector.
Known for his innovative use of materials, Gumby pulls inspiration from his fascination with astronomy and color theory. Echoing his ongoing series, Vertigo Colors, which draws inspiration from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Vertigo of Color exhibition, the mural exudes Miami’s vibrant hues through stained glass and mosaic techniques, creating a multisensory experience that captivates both the eye and the spirit. Combining his quest and passion to explore the mysteries of color and the cosmos, Gumby’s mural will feature scattered black marks representing colors beyond our visible spectrum—a nod to the ongoing discoveries in astrophysics.
“The mural is a cultural celebration,” Gumby said. “‘Living the Dream’ invites the community to connect with Miami’s urban beauty on a deeper level, fostering a sense of pride and appreciation. Through this visually engaging project, I hope to evoke both awe and tranquility.”
Working to enrich the Design District’s visual landscape through vibrant colors and symbolisms, “Living the Dream” is set to become a landmark that embodies the neighborhood’s design-forward approach. 176 NE 41st St., Miami
