You may be familiar with LA-based contemporary artist Beau Dunn. Her series “Plastic,” inspired by her own experience of growing up in LA, features various portraits of America’s ultimate sweetheart, Barbie. Or you might recognize her neon sculptures: “Need Money for Birkin” hangs in Kris Jenner’s “Birkin closet.”
Showcasing at Art Basel Miami Beach for the sixth time this year, Dunn will unveil a brand new neon art piece that’s very Miami. Here, she gives us the scoop on Art Basel through her own lens.
Favorite thing about Art Basel Miami Beach?
BEAU DUNN: I absolutely love spending quality time with my fellow artist friends from around the world. Art Basel fills Miami with this amazing creative energy and there is beautiful art and inspiration everywhere you look.
What are you most looking forward to at this year’s fair?
BD: Seeing new art, visiting new galleries and absorbing new concepts. I love seeing the latest mediums artists are using and finding a few pieces to take home and add to my personal collection.
Hottest party to attend?
BD: Last year the hottest parties were hosted by Prada and Gucci, but this year I’m excited for the events in the newly finished Design District, including the Art Angels Gallery Grand Opening. I’m also collaborating with The Cultivist for their annual luncheon at Setai and can’t wait to mingle with my fellow art lovers. And last but not least, you can never go wrong with the beach parties at Soho House.
BD: Cecconi’s, Mandolin Aegean Bistro (best Design District spot), Pao and Prime 112.
Style tips for Art Basel?
BD: Go big or go home! Art Basel is the week when you can pull out the most colorful, shiniest, and creatively outrageous outfits.“Fair-style” is the best people watching of the week. It's like street-style, but way cooler!
How will you unwind after Art Basel?
BD: On the last day of Basel I’ll probably head to the Tierra Santa Healing House spa at the Faena Hotel or go to the beach with my girlfriends. When I finally make it home to LA, I love to lay low and unwind with my French Bulldogs, French and Finn.
