As a child, Carly Kuhn probably scribbled on the walls of her room. Wall drawings are the inspiration behind a series of eight of her wallpaper designs titled Prelude to Decadence, which the prominent artist and illustrator is debuting from her newly established art and design studio in Miami monikered The Cartelier.

Kuhn, better known to her many followers as The Cartorialist (@thecartorialist), is not new to the creative field. She found fame through fashion illustration, working alongside brands such as Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Prada and Malibu Surfrider, among others—made even more popular by a repost from actress-fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker—and recently by collaborating with the online furniture retailer Chairish on a custom print series.
Kuhn shares, “I love to collaborate with companies or individuals who share a similar design sensibility but also believe in my unique style. I also love collaborating outside my direct industry. It’s a way to have my art become part of an experience, whether it be a French bakery, a wine label or a gorgeously delicious candle.”

A New York native and 12- year Los Angeles resident, The Cartorialist has now combined her wit with samplings from Miami in Prelude to Decadence. This wallpaper series draws inspiration from 1950s New York, Kuhn’s love for the timelessness of European film, as well as the 75 years of Al Hirschfeld illustrations, within which he hid his daughter’s name Nina as a visual game. Adopting Hirschfeld’s playfulness, Kuhn’s hand-drawing wallpapers have themes such as Putting My Eyes On, Cocktail Hour and Dainty Shoe. The imaginativeness of Lipstick Joint functions as a visual text message of a fun night out in Manhattan’s golden era, while Dainty Stripe recalls school years with a series of horizontal lines that echo the dark-blue and pink top lines of a classic school notebook. Whimsy Chairs is an ode to both the eccentric and minimalist styles of vintage and contemporary seating, while the ornate plumage of Peacocks offers animal print lovers a tastefully decadent oeuvre. Complementing these, the graphic shadowed fronds in Palms on Palms are a tribute to Miami’s tropical insignia.

Combining classical decadence with fresh wit and a contemporary application, The Cartorialist’s Prelude to Decadence wallpapers are an artful interior touch that imagines Carly Kuhn took residence and tastefully doodled on your walls. This begins The Cartelier’s foray into a creative series themed The Art of the Home, which will no doubt embrace its new home base, Miami.
