Comedian. Podcaster. Influencer. Claudia Oshry (aka @GirlWithNoJob) is the Mary Tyler Moore of the millennial generation.
Claudia Oshry knows how to turn lemons into lemonade. After being let go from a college internship, Oshry started documenting her life as a @GirlWithNoJob on Instagram. Today, she’s amassed more than 3 million followers who are double-tapping and LOLing at her real, relatable and downright hilarious posts. Her ability to reach the millennial generation has led to a popular pop-culture podcast, The Morning Toast, that she co-hosts with her sister (think the Today show for 20-somethings) and a stand-up comedy show, the Dirty Jeans tour, that’s selling out across the country. Here, we get to know the 24-year-old bona fide entrepreneur.
On being labeled as an “influencer”:
“It’s always been a stable business that I can rely on. I’m my own boss and I don’t have to answer to anyone, which is awesome because I’ve never been much of a rule follower. Fifty years ago if you said to a woman, ‘Do what you’re passionate about,’ her options were quite limited. But now with social media, you can really do what you want, regardless of who you are or where you’re from, and I think that’s epic.”
On how to start a brand:
“The best influencers started with pure intentions. They just wanted to document their passions, and then it turned into an empire. But if you set out with goals of only having an empire, you’re not going to be successful because people can see through your thirst like it’s nobody’s business.”
On her podcast:
“It’s a happy, positive place where you can indulge in your obsession with pop-culture. We have such a unique audience of funny, smart, cool millennial women. We’re very lucky.”
On overcoming the haters:
“So many of my followers are young girls and they ask me all the time, ‘How do you maintain your confidence?’ My answer is fake it till you make it. I will never forget the first mean comment I received on my blog. It was so rude and hurtful. But I knew that I could either rise above it or let this person ruin my life. I decided that I wasn’t going to give them the power to make me feel bad. I woke up one day and said, ‘I’m going to decide to be confident.’ One day, it just clicked. I’m in a unique position where I absolutely love myself.”
On her obsession with E11EVEN:
“It’s the greatest place on Earth. I get out of control when I go there. It’s so special and there’s nowhere else like it.”
On Miami’s ultraluxe lounge chairs:
“In hotels in other places, they give you a wooden chair with no pad. How are you supposed to relax? The hotels in Miami have major respect for the beach and give you big comfy chairs. They’re thick and cushy. That’s my favorite thing about this city, the comfort.”
On being besties with Gwyneth Paltrow:
“I am head over heels in love with her. When I met her, I just hung out with her and her kids while she ate tacos and I was living for it. She’s so cool and down-to-earth. We DM each other. It’s my greatest accomplishment.”
