Grammy Award-winning DJ and producer Benny Benassi brought more than just his tracks to the W South Beach’s WET New Year’s Eve Bash, but his universally renowned ‘electro-meets-house’ sounds for a live in concert show. Ending the year with a touch of elegance, champagne parades, and festive decorations, guests swayed into 2019 as Benny Benassi spun an open format of house music, including hit mixes like "Satisfaction," "Hit My Heart," and "Every Single Day."
We sat down with Benassi to hear more about this unforgettable celebration, his journey to becoming a Grammy Award-winning DJ, and his plans to take over the world of EDM, one hit single at a time.
Benny, how was your New Year's Eve Bash at WET? What was your favorite part of the evening? BENNY BENASSI: It was amazing. My favorite bits were the beginning, the middle, and the end!
A chart-topping megastar, how did your career in EDM first begin? BB: Thanks for the compliment. To be honest, it was so long ago. The term “EDM” hadn’t been invented yet. It all started with "Satisfaction" in 2002. Its success surprised me and the whole team. What happened was totally off the meter. We thought it was a good club record, but bang! Before that, I had been a resident DJ in Italian clubs for fifteen years. It was the turning point.
And how did this electro-meets-house hit, "Satisfaction," propel you into nonstop success. What's the story behind this first single and why the name "Satisfaction?" BB: The riff was written by my cousin and studio partner for many years, Alle. Then, we developed it. Alle invented that compression sound. It started off as pure instrumental and then we added vocals as we thought a vocal hook would make it even better. The lyrics just came out and so it had to be called "Satisfaction," of course.
Continuing to forge hit singles, what new sounds can fans look forward to hearing this year? BB: A lot of experimenting, but also a lot of house music a la Benny Benassi. House is back and that’s where I come from and what I’m about.
Benny, you have quite the compelling charm behind the DJ booth. What advice can you give to young inspiring Miami-based DJs looking to be the next you? BB: Be yourself. Cultivate your passion.
Do you have a favorite moment behind the DJ booth? BB: There are a lot of favorite moments. I’ve had a great run. Chris Brown jumping into the booth during a set in Las Vegas was pretty amazing.
Now a Grammy Award-winning producer and DJ, what are your wishes for this coming year and your plans for the future? BB: I wish everyone a fabulous 2019 on the dance floor. My plans are to be there with you!
