The GGA Gallery at the Wynwood Walls is now presenting Dan Kitchener's first solo show in the U.S., Tokyo Rain. Kitchener (also known as DANK) opened to the public on May 20 with a collection of never-before-seen works, including source pictures, sketchbooks, drawings, and captivating large-scale paintings. This work showcases Kitchener's deft freehand spray paint methods and exceptional draftsmanship, demonstrating the intriguing evolution from photograph to sketch to painting.

Although Tokyo Rain is Kitchener's first solo exhibition in the country and at GGA Gallery, spectators may remember his work from the massive mural he painted inside the Wynwood Walls in 2019. Inside the museum, it is still one of the most photographed and intriguing murals.
Kitchener's paintings frequently begin with a photograph he took of a real-life event. The show's title, "Tokyo Rain," refers to a typical scenario Kitchener encounters: in the middle of the night, while rain pours down, he remains still as the city scurries around him, seeking shelter from the storm. An ethereal snapshot of that moment in time is eventually translated to canvas. With rich hues, fuzzy lines, and epic size, he captures that frenetic force unachievable through the nozzle of a spray can.
He has been absorbing Japanese culture his entire life, from black and white samurai films to Godzilla and monster movies, comics, and even typography. Kitchener's surreal, cinematic style is a result of these influences. He maintains his strong admiration and fascination as he travels to different areas worldwide. His journeys now take him to dozens of places and are commemorated by hundreds of murals.
Over the previous year, Dan Kitchener and GGA curator Peter Tunney collaborated closely to bring together this excellent survey of DANK's work. Kitchener's characteristic works are nearly entirely made of spray paint. Scenes from Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara, New York City, London, and elsewhere are shown in the exhibition. The public can visit Tokyo Rain from May 19 to July 20, 2022.
Kitchener is a London-based British artist noted for his freehand spray painting method on the walls of famous towns throughout the world. His massive multicolored murals portray street scenes and rainy night cityscapes in New York City, Moscow, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Canada, and Europe, bringing light, color, and energy to these places. His paintings have an impressionistic aspect, with scenes that will relate to anyone who has ever wandered through a city late at night.
He has been a big part of the street art/mural scene for about 16 years. His reputation continues to rise as he works with celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Miley Cyrus, Sir Paul McCartney, and Lenny Kravitz. He's made a name for himself as a leading personality in street art, leaving a lasting impression on cities one mural at a time.
