REC (also known as "REC Philly") will launch "REC Miami" in 2023 with a $2 million investment from Sean Combs Capital, the project's lead investor. REC is an ecosystem built and dedicated to giving creative people the resources, communities, and opportunities to follow their hobbies and business aspirations. It was founded by Forbes 30 Under 30 honorees Will Toms and Dave Silver.
Over 1,000 active members have subscribed to the REC Philly membership package, which provides creators with access to a 10,000 sq ft creative space, educational activities, and a network of brands in need of creative services. Members use the space to create content, connect with collaborators, and attend educational and social programming, while marketers use REC to find the greatest rising talent for their projects. In Philadelphia, current brand partners include Live Nation, Comcast, Cash App, WXPN, WSFS Bank, Amuse, Red Bull, T-Mobile, Ballard Spahr, and Temple University.
Combs is dedicated to building brands and enterprises that create chances and platforms for the next generation of artists. Combs Enterprises will not only use REC's venues but will also tap into the creative talent to elevate the brands under its umbrella. With his investment, REC joins Combs Enterprises' portfolio of investments.
"Our goal is to make sure that independent creators have the information, tools, and resources needed to win and level the playing field," said Combs. "This partnership is about the future of the creator economy and helping REC expand to serve more creators in cities and countries around the world."
Since its debut in 2015, REC's model has helped pay out approximately $2 million directly to members of its community through its creative agency. The firm has shown to be a strong bridge for brands to meaningfully participate in the independent creative revolution by adopting a 'creator-first' approach that is refreshing to the entertainment industry status quo.
"Our key focus is turning artists and creators into creative entrepreneurs. We've known since the beginning that we weren't just solving a Philadelphia problem. Access to resources, strategies and opportunities is a global challenge for creatives everywhere, and with Diddy's support, we're excited to bring our solution to communities beyond our hometown of Philly, "said Will Toms, Co-founder of REC.
REC will arrive in Miami next year as part of a deal with Diddy. The Miami location will feature a 12,000-square-foot creative facility, complete with several recording studios, photo/video production studios, editing bays, podcast studios, dance studios, design studios, an event venue, coworking space, and the in-house production equipment required to generate high-quality media. REC Miami will be located in Little River, a Miami neighborhood project owned and developed by Adventurous Journeys Capital Partners, a forward-thinking real estate and hospitality firm, in collaboration with local partner MVW Partners. The neighborhood, comprised of adaptive reuse and ground-up building, spans 25 acres of land and includes more than 1.08 million square feet of space.
"In Philadelphia, much of our success comes from our ability to empower & convene the local creative community, making it easy for both local & global brands to know where they can find & hire creative talent. Getting artists paid has always been our most impactful metric, and I'm excited to bring that same energy into Miami," said REC's Co-founder & CEO, Dave Silver.
Frank Santella was one of the first Managers Silver & Toms worked with when they started holding concerts in 2012. Santella is currently Diddy's day-to-day music manager. This friendship between the two has strengthened over time, and it's one of the foundations that has made this collaboration possible.
According to Toms, Silver, and their crew, Philly and Miami are just the beginning of the rapidly expanding REC vision. The collective is actively looking for leaders in cities worldwide to take the idea to the next level.
