Superstar Ellie Goulding chats about her new partnership with M.A.C Cosmetics, her beauty secrets, and why she appreciates her friendship with Taylor Swift.
M.A.C Cosmetics—known for its collaborations with famous faces like Rihanna and Lady Gaga—has done it again. This time, the edgy brand partnered with English sensation Ellie Goulding, who introduced her highly anticipated collection of pale nudes and pinks during Art Basel Miami Beach.
As the latest artist to grace M.A.C's makeup hall of fame, Goulding treated a VIP crowd to an unforgettable acoustic performance at the Miami Beach EDITION on December 2. Before that, we spoke with the sultry singer about all things makeup, why she loves being in Miami, and why she appreciates her friends who "don't take any sh*ts" from anyone.
Congrats on joining the M.A.C family. What was your reaction when you found out they wanted to collaborate with you? ELLIE GOULDING: I imagine my initial reaction was probably that it was a joke. I’m always so overwhelmed when I’m presented with such incredible opportunities. It’s just the way I am as a person, I’m grateful for everything. I've wanted to work with M.A.C forever. I’ve always loved M.A.C makeup and it was sort of a dream come true, really.
Do you remember the first M.A.C product you ever owned? EG: I think it was a pink blush, I can’t remember the name of it. I definitely started getting lipsticks first and, as I could afford it more, I started getting a bit more. I remember it was such a luxury for me back in the day.
And now you have your own collection! How hands-on were you in coming up with the concept and collaborating on colors? EG: I wanted to make something that I actually wore. I often get people asking me what makeup I was wearing—on TV and during performances—and I wanted something you could either wear very lightly or [could] build up, and that’s kind of what I do. I’ve been doing my makeup since I was 13 or 14. I just love it.
I know you’re a big fan of Miami. What do you like to do when you're here? EG: My friend runs Barry’s Bootcamp here so we do [that]. I also soak up as much sun as I can [because] it’s so rare for me. A couple of times I’ve gone out on a boat because I love the sea, and to me that’s the ultimate freedom. I love just kicking back and enjoying the sea and the sun because honestly, being a British girl, I get it so little. This is such a huge deal to be in Miami!
What’s your beauty regimen like? Is there anything you do in particular? EG: I drink a lot of water and green tea, and I think training helps because my skin is constantly being replenished. It’s important to have a healthy lifestyle. I try to eat well [and] I think it’s important to be healthy on the inside before anything else. You can use as many products as you'd like, but you've got to be living a vaguely healthy lifestyle. I do drink [alcohol] though!
You have a great support system that includes Taylor Swift and Lorde. How important is it for you to surround yourself with good female role models, especially in this industry? EG: Certainly now more than ever, it’s so good to have those kinds of people around. And it’s not just people in the spotlight; it’s people who understand the music industry, who also just understand being a girl. This job can be so crazy and it's good to have a big support network of really strong, powerful, don’t-take-any-sh*ts kind of girls.
