French writer J.M.G. Le Clézio once observed that “the function of a museum is not to show us pieces or art but give us the opportunity, the tools, to look at ourselves through those objects.”

Ferragamo’s new pre-spring 2022 collection, photographed at the Museo Marino Marini in Florence, Italy, contemplates this notion that one can learn something new about oneself by interacting with and reflecting upon the art around them. This symbiosis doesn’t only exist between the models and the sculptures they elegantly drape themselves over; it extends to the way Ferragamo’s collection interacts with the history of the Marini itself.

Originally built as a church before being turned into a factory, the space has always evolved to reflect the present moment. Its current reincarnation as a museum was a labor of love enacted by the wife of artist Marino Marini in order to display his collection of work.

Now, the Marini’s ever-changing functionality is reflected in the philosophy that drives Ferragamo’s new collection. With an upcycled patchwork leather dress and overdyed vintage scarf print dress from the Ferragamo archives, the pre-spring 2022 collection fuses Ferragamo’s heritage of innovation with the future-facing and sustainable practice of upcycling.

The collection is modeled by Sara Grace Wallerstedt and Daniel P, a duo fashioned in a nod to the tradition of nouvelle vague. Together as this season’s ‘it’ couple, united by their appreciation for the history of the art surrounding them, they elevate the warm-toned leathers and bright overdyed fabrics characteristic of this season’s Ferragamo.

The collection features both menswear and womenswear as well as shoes and bags, all with an emphasis on modern craftsmanship and an eye towards the future of fashion. The womenswear collection features biker jackets, sleeveless coats, semi-sheer recycled jersey and more. The menswear collection features reimagined military chinos, a deconstructed silk smoking jacket, mohair trousers and leather blousons, among others.

Point-toed mules, “Future Positive” scuba-sneakers and penny loafers round out the shoes, while a birdcage construction bucket bag is sure to catch eyes.
