Adrienne Arsht Center will be showcasing The Hip Hop Nutcracker on December 11. The day will consist of two shows, a matinee at 3:30 p.m. and an evening show at 8:30 p.m.
This year’s production includes hip-hop icon, Kurtis “The Breaks” Blow. Blow was the first rapper to ever be signed by a major label in 1979, and as hip-hops founding father, he is performing as the MC of this year’s production.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a high-energy and amazing performance, combining the classic story while incorporating many elements of hip-hop dance culture. Many dancers have built a strong appreciation for the show, including ballet superstar Mikhail Baryshnikov who said, "Athleticism is one thing and artistry is another, but Jennifer Weber's Hip Hop Nutcracker puts the two together like I've never seen. It's deeply moving, ingeniously modern and pure magic."
The reimagined performance includes 12 amazing dancers, an on-stage DJ and an electronic violinist. Together the group has created an unstoppable show and community.
Director and choreographer Jennifer Weber has worked her magic on this production to be sure to include all of the essential elements of the classic tale while bringing a new style.
The Adrienne Arsht Center performance is part of a nationwide tour the group is taking part in, hitting cities including Austin, Brooklyn, Boston and more.
