Mattel Creations has announced a new partnership with Gucci, recreating a to-scale model of Gucci's 1978 General Motors classic, the Gucci Cadillac Seville. The Hot Wheels x Gucci Cadillac Seville limited-edition miniature car is part of the famed fashion house's 100th anniversary.
“This epic and unexpected collaboration between Gucci and Hot Wheels reinforces that toys are a canvas that reflect pop culture, fashion and design,” Mattel President and Chief Operating Officer Richard Dickson states in a press release. “We are thrilled to celebrate and honor Gucci’s incredible 100th milestone with an artistic take on a limited-edition Hot Wheels reinforcing the significance of toys as art.”
Introduced via the 1978 Cadillac Seville, the Gucci package was intended to add legendary Italian styling to the Detroit luxury automobile. The sought-after cars featured an interlocking double “G” crest; a gold Gucci hood ornament; gold Gucci emblems on the wheels, front fenders and C-pillar; and Gucci’s iconic red and green web stripes across the rear trunk. The luxe interior featured monogrammed seats and a logo-printed glove compartment and headrests.
Creating a statement in the fashion world today just as it did decades ago, the 1982 Cadillac Seville plays into today's nostalgic '80s and '90s Radwood custom car movement. Outfitted in the classic Gucci logo and iconic interlocking GG pattern, the 1:64 scale interior features details authentic to the life-size vehicles, including gold piping on the seats. The toy vehicle comes in a sleek display case designed and produced by Gucci.
Gucci is no stranger to cars: in 1972 and 1973, Gucci partnered with AMC to produce just less than 2,600 Hornet cars. In 2013, Gucci partnered with Fiat for a special edition Fiat 500 Gucci. Maserati x Ermenegildo Zegna, Bugatti x Hermès, and Maserati x Fendi offer more recent examples of automotive companies and fashion houses that have joined forces.
The Hot Wheels x Gucci 1982 Cadillac Seville retails for $120 and will be available on MattelCreations.com and Gucci.com as soon as Oct. 18. Collectors can also find the limited-edition toy in select Gucci stores in New York, Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo, as well as temporary locations such as the Gucci Cartoleria in Milan and the Gucci Circolo in London, Berlin and Milan.
