The Broken Shaker gets Massolo's vote for most well-rounded bar.
With 19 years of liquor industry experience, Jen Massolo is among Miami's top mixology authorities. After stints with Rémy Martin and Viña Concha y Toro—the largest winery in the southern hemisphere—Massolo spearheaded operations for the Miami International Wine Fair for more than a decade. Her newest venture, CRAFT Spirits & Beer, introduces Miami to 200 plus artisanal brands via tastings, seminars, and events. But which Miami bars does Massolo post up at for a casual drink? Best all-around atmosphere and cocktails: "Elad Zvi and Gabriel Orta of The Broken Shaker (2727 Indian Creek Dr., Miami Beach) have garnered a James Beard nomination for a reason: they live and breathe their art. Not only do they have a fine artisanal spirits and craft beer list, their seasonal craft cocktail list is comprised of the freshest of local ingredients. The jewel box bar and garden setting are always a great atmosphere, full of friends and excellent service."
For an under-the-radar experience: "The Corner (1035 N. Miami Ave., Miami). The gritty, urban location provides the backdrop for a cozy, prohibition era craft cocktail and beer bar. Aubrey Russell, head mixologist, is always a pleasure to see, and his cocktail concoctions are very well done."
Bayou-inspired imbibing: "I love Lagniappe House's (3245 N.E. 2nd Ave., Miami) craft beer and fine wine selection, not to mention its New Orleans-style living room and garden setting."
Most Elegant Throwback: "The bar at The Cypress Room (3620 N.E. 2nd Ave., Miami) is a beautiful, classic cocktail bar with a '20s to '30s feeling. I think this is the most polished bar in town, from the glassware to the superior concoctions."
Best wine list and most knowledgeable staff: Michael's Genuine Food & Drink (130 N.E. 40th St., Miami) and Mandolin Aegean Bistro (4312 N.E. 2nd Ave., Miami) have some of the best wine lists in town. You can find some lesser-known varieties, thanks to very knowledgable guidance from the powers that be."
