Katy Perry brings her California cool to the AmericanAirlines Arena this December.
Katy Perry’s Witness: The Tour has glitz, glam and wandering eyeballs.
Katy Perry may have “California Gurls” to thank for her success, but don’t expect her Dec. 20 concert to be a bubblegum pop bonanza. Since releasing the hit track in 2010, the 33-year-old has weathered everything from a divorce to a very public feud with Taylor Swift. “Fluffy stuff would be completely inauthentic to who I am now and what I’ve learned,” she says. “If you have a voice, you have a responsibility to use it now.” Still, Perry hasn’t traded in big-budget arena spectacles for the simple girl-and-guitar model. On the contrary, the tour for her fifth album, Witness, features everything from a giant wandering eyeball to the infamous Left Shark from her 2015 Super Bowl performance. What has changed is her music; Witness eschews traditional pop hooks for tracks reminiscent of ’80s new wave and ’90s house music. Perry goes all in on the best (and worst) of those decades’ pop culture. True “KatyCats” will want to spring for the Diamond Witness VIP package, which includes a seat in The Drop Zone, a danceable area on the floor of the arena. And for those diehard fans looking for a Perry spotting, try the perpetually buzzy Prime 112 or the trendy Soho Beach House, where she’s a regular. If all else fails, hit the beach. She is a California girl, after all. ticketmaster.com
