It can be difficult in Miami to judge the end of one year and the start of another. With temperatures maintaining a hot and sunny disposition throughout the 12 months, what’s the difference between December and January, fall and winter? I’m sure I speak for everyone in Miami, though, when I say I’m ready to say hello to 2017.
The final months of 2016 brought about interesting times in South Florida, from the traffic-snarling swing state visits by president-elect Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton (not to mention multiple last-minute visits by President Obama) to the death of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro—Miami’s vibrancy, culture, and importance on a national scale continued to take center stage. We also saw Zika, a strong dollar, changing trends in real estate… and the loss of Dwyane Wade. It was a rollercoaster year for anyone who lives and breathes the 305. New challenges will present themselves this year: a new president, new laws, new problems, new solutions. I think everyone is curious how it will all turn out.

For us Miamians, immigration, tax laws, and the rising sea levels seem to be three subjects that, regardless of who is in charge, we are passionate about. Nonetheless, we still have our beaches, our weather, our pace, and all that is beautiful. So it’s with great pleasure that we celebrate our 24th year of Ocean Drive with the gorgeous, multi-hyphenate Olivia Culpo.
Believe it or not, you could learn a lot from her. The ugly-duckling story of a self-described “chubby girl” who played the cello but became a global beauty phenomenon can be an inspiration to us all: She never took no for an answer and now is one of the sought-after personalities in the luxury and beauty market. Her passions for music, culture, and hard work make her a perfect match for Miami—beautiful on the outside, substance on the inside. Here’s to a great 2017!
