Among the artists participating in Wynwood's inaugural III Points festival (October 3) is Brian Butler, who hails from the northeast but has called Miami home for the past three years. An illustrator and muralist, Butler's work can be found on façades in Wynwood and the Design District. Jay-Z fans may also recognize his style: Butler created graphics for the rapper's "Heart of the City" and "Blueprint 3" tours.
Tag origin or nickname: "I sign everything Brian Butler, but I started using the 'Upperhandart' handle online like 10 years ago. I was spending a lot of time at the beach and my sun-fried imagination loaded it with all types of meaning, most of which probably isn't even relevant to what I do. For instance, I was really stoked on how HAND can be an acronym for 'have a nice day.'"
Inspiration: "I try to let my projects dictate the inspiration. I think using project-specific archetypes to springboard my ideas helps keep everything in context."
Craft: "I'd describe my work as pretty graphic and illustrative. I love doodling. I pretty much always have a sketchbook handy.
Workspace: "I'm working out of The Ansonia on Miami Beach right now. It's conveniently across the street from the Bass Museum and there's a beer garden called Sweet Water in the courtyard. It's pretty sweet to be able to grab a fresh juice or take a swim break on the property."
Commercial projects: "I've been doing commercial projects for as long as I've been using the Upperhandart moniker. I started through doing flyers and T-shirts for local bands in Massachusetts. I love music and I've always considered it a win-win to pair my drawings with rad bands."
Hobbies: "I'm obsessed with going to shows. I end up doodling at Churchill's a lot. I have a rule of finishing the drawings before leaving the show. I think the energy of the show comes through better that way."
Miami Loves: "I love living down here. There's an awesome community of artists and musicians, great weather, and a time-honored tradition of executing sun-fried ideas. Who single-handedly builds a Coral Castle?"
