The Academy Award-winning film Moonlight broke barriers within the film industry in 2016. It became the first LGBTQ film with an all-black cast, and was both set and shot right here in Miami. The film follows the life of Chiron, a man who grew up in a crime-ridden neighborhood in Miami, and the struggles that follow him into adulthood. Filming sites in Miami include Virginia Key Beach, the Miami Metromover Station, South Beach and Miramar High School.
This comedy-drama from 2014 follows Miami-born chef Carl Casper. After a public confrontation with a food critic leaves him unemployable, he finds himself down in Miami opening a Cuban food truck and rediscovering his love for the cuisine. The film features scenes shot at Versailles Restaurant and Fontainebleau Hotel.
This 2017 action-comedy film is based upon the 1989 television series by the same name. The plot follows lifeguard Lt. Mitch Buchannon and his team, who together make up the Baywatch division for the protection of fictional Emerald Bay in Florida. While the film is also shot in Georgia, numerous scenes feature Ocean Terrace in Miami Beach. Baywatch also premiered in South Beach on Ocean Drive.
A partially true story inspired by real events, the iconic film Scarface details the story (and downfall) of Cuban refugee turned drug kingpin, Tony Montana. The film gives viewers a glimpse into the violent, complex criminal history of Miami as the film is shot and set in the city. Filming locations include the Fontainebleau, Star Island and the Miami Beach Art Deco District.
This rom-com follows the journey of Mary’s former prom date attempting to find her 13 years later. Although the private investigator he employs successfully finds Mary working as an orthopedic surgeon in Miami, his own feelings for her begin a messy series of events. The film features scenes shot in Coral Gables, Brickell, at the (now) HistoryMiami Museum, Ocean Drive and Brickell Key Causeway.
A family favorite, Marley & Me follows a family that has just moved to Florida and their adoption of a yellow Labrador puppy named Marley. As he grows up he becomes a handful, but teaches the family important life values of friendship, love and loyalty. Viewers will notice scenes from a Miami Marlins game, Monty’s Raw Bar in Coconut Grove and Bayside Marketplace.
