You recently moved to Miami—what has been the most exciting thing so far? What are you most looking forward to?
I love moving to a new place and meeting new people. Living by the water is a dream come true. Miami is such a beautiful place; I don’t think the people here realize it. Many opportunities are here, and I’m excited to make my mark.
What are some of your go-to spots in the city?
I love the coffee from Panther Coffee. Rosetta Bakery makes incredible sandwiches. I haven’t tried many dinner places yet, but Chateau ZZ’s is amazing.
What have you learned about yourself through the professional tennis circuit?
The professional circuit has taught me how to get back up again when you feel like you’re in the gutter. There have been so many times that I have felt like quitting, not wanting to train, losing a match, crying for hours in the locker room, and beating myself up. But the next day, I always get back up again and start fresh. The mentality of teaching yourself how to get better from defeat is a hard road but extremely rewarding.
What is your ultimate career goal?
I want to be in the top 50 in the world, playing on center courts like Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I love racing. Ever since I was little, I have loved driving cars. In England, we grew up learning stick shifts, so when I got my license, the first thing I wanted to do was go on an F1 track and race. I prefer driving on a stick shift because you can feel the car changing gears. It’s a lot of fun to drive.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
My coach Alan Jones, with whom I grew up training, passed recently. This hit me hard because he was like a second dad. At the end of every session, he would ask me if I gave 100%, and I couldn’t ever be dishonest with him. If I said no, he would ask me, ‘What are you afraid of?’ When you don’t give 100%, it’s usually because you fear putting your all in and failing. But you are more at risk of failing if you are not trying. He told me this when I was 14, and it has stuck in my head ever since for every area of my life.
