We caught up with Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell to chat about everything from her plans on the night of the PLL finale to social media and what’s next.
Last week, Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell jetted to South Florida to revel in her stunning Ocean Drive May/June issue cover. The brunette beauty stepped out onto the red carpet at Kuro at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in a chic "rocker look," donning a black tank and skinny jeans paired with Giuseppe Zanotti heels and a vintage Gucci belt. The actress and social media maven spent the evening mingling and snapping selfies with guests before heading south to Joe’s Stone Crab for a slice of key lime pie. "It’s too good," she told Ocean Drive.
Before the celebration began, we chatted with the star on how she plans to watch the Pretty Little Liars finale, social media, and a thrilling upcoming project (hint: Mitchell "may or may not" play producer…).
How do you plan to see the Pretty Little Liars finale? Shay Mitchell: We’re going to try to get the majority of the cast together—I don’t know if it’s going to be possible, but we’re going to aim for that. Hopefully, whoever is on the west coast will all get together!
PLL is all about secrets. What’s one secret we may not know about you? SM: I’m a really great singer in the shower. Lately, I’ve been singing a lot of Frank Sinatra.
In the cover story, you talked about how you overcome criticism for not looking the part of Emily Fields. How do you feel about it now? SM: I think that they’ve all accepted us. You tend to fall in love with the characters of a book, especially when you’re a really big fan of it. But I think that now, they’ve appreciated the hard work we’ve put into the characters.
You just hit 17 million followers on Instagram, and always celebrate with a special photo commemorating the milestone. Tell us about the photo celebrating 17 million. SM: I shot it up on a roof in L.A., and it was actually very raining and so windy. Carrying balloons up on a rooftop in the wind is definitely something I’ll remember. We had a lot of fun, but after that shot was done!
We can’t wait to see 18 million... SM: That one’s going to be crazy—I’m really going to amp it up!
Speaking of social media, you’re known for posting funny videos on Snapchat. Why do you do it? SM: I love making people laugh. I think Snapchat is such a fun platform to connect with my followers and show them a different side. I just really like to have fun with it.
Your Instagram is filled with beautiful photos from your travels. What’s your favorite place you’ve traveled to recently? SM: Marrakech, Morocco is definitely among the top. I absolutely love it. The people are amazing and the food is great.
Tell us about your upcoming projects… SM: I’m so excited about the upcoming movie [Cadaver—in theaters late August]. And there’s a show that’s in the works that I may or may not be producing…
