A day at the races—one that’s full of dress codes, steep in history, outlining strict standards of three-piece suits, top hats, and the upmost famous accessory of large brimmed hats. But this year, at the $16 million Pegasus World Cup in Gulfstream Park, tradition was amped up with a spark of Miami heat, to feature elevated culinary masterpieces by Chef Wolfgang of The Stronach Group and a partnership with Groot Hospitality’s LIV, to present spectators with a trackside club, coined Pegasus LIV Stretch Village. And between VIP hospitality and a post-race megastar performance with Snoop Dogg and Mark Ronson, equestrian enthusiasts were at the epicenter of entertainment, luxury, and Thoroughbred horse racing.
Ocean Drive sat down with Snoop Dogg and Mark Ronson to hear more about this iconic performance at Pegasus LIV Stretch Village, their favorite horses, and go-to game day eats.
Tell us about your performance at Pegasus this year? SNOOP DOGG: I’m gonna do me. That’s all I know how to do is just bring the best of me and give people what they love from, no matter what it is on every level. So, I’m gonna try to do as much as I can to make people happy with what I do.
What hit tracks can spectators expect to hear? SD: A little bit of everything. You know, I’ll go back to the ’90s, early 2000s. Maybe something from right now.
This championship invitational presents guests with the ultimate dinner party. Recently wrapping up your second season of Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party with Martha Stewart, what plates would you and Stewart recommend serving at this ultra-luxe event? SD: I usually let Martha take the lead on these types of events! You know, I’m hood based so she would know exactly the right meals and hor d'oeuvres, edibles, to put together.
What would you say is your all time favorite game day food? SD: My favorite game food’s probably some nuggets or some fries. Do they got that here? They got chicken wings and nuggets?
I think they’re serving everything from pastrami egg rolls to foie gras and lobster! SD: Alright, we’re gonna see.
And Mark, a superstar resident DJ, spinning at nightclubs all over the world, how does it feel to perform inside the stadium of America’s most recognized horse race? MARK RONSON: It’s exciting! You know, horse races in the summer are a big part of England where I grew up. Its fun, everybody’s dressed up. Of course you can see I didn't get the memo, but it’s exciting to come and play here.
Growing up in England, did you horseback ride as a child? MR: I tried it. I was not very good.
Which horse are you rooting for? MR: Accelerate and I like Audible because it sounds like something I would make.
Tell us about your performance inside Pegasus LIV Stretch Village. Will you be playing tracks from your newest hit album, Late Night Feelings? MR: Yes, I think so. I’ll be playing "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart" with Miley and some different things.
Focusing on break ups, you turn ballads into upbeat tunes. What message do you want to relay to your listeners through your music? MR: I just wanted to make something that was emotional that you can still dance to. You know, when you think of great songs like "Don’t Leave Me This Way" and "I Will Survive"—old songs—you can still have both of those feelings of sadness and dance.
So, would you say we can all survive a break up? MR: Yes.
And Mark, I have to ask, what’s your favorite nightclub to spin at in Miami? MR: I used to come down here all the time and play back when it was Crobar, Cameo. I love LIV. My brother Romain has tons of great nightclubs, Mynt. There’s so many great clubs here!
