If you’re looking for more than mud, steam and aromatherapy from your day at the spa, Dr. Karen Koffler, medical director at Canyon Ranch Hotel & Spa, has the answer. —Jane Kellogg
OCEAN DRIVE: Tell us about your role as medical director.
KAREN KOFFLER: I run the center’s health and wellness program with a team of acupuncturists, nutritionists, exercise physiologists, physical therapists, healing-energy practitioners and life-management coaches. Together we provide personalized, integrative care for everything from a chronic health issue to poor sleep habits.
What distinguishes integrative medicine?
Unlike conventional medicine, it’s healing-oriented. We emphasize that diet, exercise and sleep all play a role in our health. Ours is the only program that I know of in South Florida that has a full integrative medical center.
Is there a program focused on weight loss?
With our Healthy Weight for Life package, patients have sessions with our specialists and fitness professionals. We’re all about education at Canyon Ranch. We’re teaching people what eating healthy looks like. We test your metabolism, body composition and a host of other factors that affect your weight.
