CBD, or cannabidiol, is everywhere. You can find it at your supermarket, salon, and even local restaurants. But, what is it? And why are people so obsessed with it? Let’s take a closer look at CBD and see if it’s something you’d like to add to your wellness routine.
CBD is just one of over 100 therapeutic compounds (phytocannabinoids) found in the cannabis plant. Yes. Cannabis. As in marijuana. Phytocannabinoids are unique to cannabis and help restore balance to the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The ECS acts like a regulator to all of the body’s other systems. It produces compounds called endocannabinoids that help it regulate, but sometimes the ECS gets unbalanced. That’s where phytocannabinoids, like CBD, come in. They help restore the function of the ECS.
Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychoactive. Scientists are just beginning to understand the benefits of CBD. But, early research shows CBD may help reduce inflammation, boost immunity, and ease anxiety. Research also shows it helps counteract the psychoactive effects of THC.
CBD is considered a supplement, similar to vitamins, and is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As a result, there are many low-quality, and even fake, products on the market. A 2017 study found nearly 70 percent of CBD extracts sold online are mislabeled and not actually CBD. You have to be extremely careful when purchasing CBD.
Here’s our expert advice to help you select high-quality CBD products:
It’s important to know what you’re purchasing when considering CBD, just like any supplement or medicinal product.
If you think you could benefit from CBD, we encourage you to talk to a doctor who understands cannabinoids before you begin. A doctor will look at your unique health needs, how CBD might benefit you, and can even recommend products for you.
